kind of rookie or noob with hand guns, all I have owned in the past is .22 pistols so just looking for a little advice. About a month ago I got my first .45, it is a Remington 1911 I have not shot it yet, have not even bought any ammo yet. I was wondering what bullets I should look at shooting out of this gun, weight, style, brand etc... I know right now its kinda take what you can find but lets just pretend things were back to normal, I would like ammo mainly for target shooting, and then also some different for home defense or CC. Is there anything I should absolutelly stay away from. Also I dont reload.
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Any military or commercial 230gr FMJ is good for targets or plinking....For personal defense, look at either Speer Gold Dots or Hornady Personal Defense...Buy two boxes of either and shoot at least one magazine through the weapon to insure that there will not be any function problems, after you get the weapon 'broken in'...

Most semi-auto handguns need at least 100 rounds through them just to make sure function is 100% and all parts are mating together...Especially if you are considering it for personal defense...

My top recomendations for self-defense/cc ammo in .45 are:

- Ranger T (if you can find any... marketed mainly to LEOs)
- Federal HST
- Gold Dot
- Win PDX1 (actually repackaged FBI duty load)

These rounds own the lion's share of the LEO market and have been proven on the street... to the extent that any handgun round can be said to be "proven."

All my 1911s, and I have a few, are given a diet of 230gr ball ammo (fmj), and for HD I use 230gr Remington golden saber. I did load and shoot a bunch of 200gr plated bullets in USPSA and IDPA matches but I do not use them anymore because the 230gr shoot better.

I would match your practice/target ammo with the same bullet weights you will use in your self-defense ammo. If your handloading, try to duplicate the velocities for both practice and defense.
