45 ACP Cast Load Advice

Ok here's the deal:

I've been loading MBC 200 RNFP with ~5gr hp-38. The accuracy hasn't been horrible but it's not great. I'm far from a cast expert but I think since they have Brinell of 18, I may not be pushing them hard enough.. I'm getting to the end of those bullets and getting ready to order some more.

I'm thinking that I might order the MBC 185gr "button". They have a Brinell of 12. I've read that that bullet with ~5gr hp-38 is producing really good accuracy.

Do you think I'd have better luck with them? I know the only real way to know is to try them out and I know that different powder types/weights would be helpful in workup... but I have a TON of hp-38 and a little dandy rotor that throws 5gr. I'd like to stick with this combo if possible.

Thanks for the help.

can't help you with the hp 38 but in my .45acp I run a 200 grain semiwad cutter with Titegroup and Clays and I'm not home but I THINK i'm running 4.8 and get great accuracy and a nice handling load.

I use Mastercast bullets, 200gr. SWC
These are top quality cast bullets. Try them, you will not be dissapointed.
My Load:
5.4gr. of HP-38
Winchester brass
WLP primer

This is a great load, pretty good power and Accurate.
For a little lighter load and even more accurate
5.2gr. of HP-38

I get no leading from my 45acp's

Mastercast Bullets

If you order at least 1K of any given bullet from MBC they will cast it to any hardness you request. At least they used to, it has been about 2 years since I ordered from them. Also the guy who owns the business hangs out on thehighroad.org alot, and has a 5% off discount code that he changes periodically posted on there (again it has been a couple of years). I ordered my 45 acp bullets in brinell 15 and haven't had much trouble with leading from my loads.

^ I'll give them a call tomorrow. The mastercast bullets look great but I'd love to stick with the RNFP if possible.

I hate making these type of decisions!

HP-38 is a classic powder for the 45 acp. I have been using it for several years. I got a deal on an 8 # box of HP-38 for $50 right before the Obama gun/ammo scare began in '08. For a 230 grain bullet, 5.2-5.4 is great. Slightly more can be used for a 200 grain bullet, but the 5.2 and 5.2 grain loads shot so well that I didn't go up on the charge.

Generally you will get better accuracy from the SWC, at least that has been my experiance
