45 colt cast bullets

I was wondering if anyone knows the seating depth of cast bullets of any weight, or if there is a method you use to calculate the seating depth. I just ordered 270saa ,and 315gr bullets and my reloading books are limited in cast bullet loads and seating depth.

The crimp groove is your guide. If there are two crimp grooves, use the one that load's the longer COAL as long as the bullet does not protrude beyond the mouth of the cylinder.

Leastwise, that's how I do it.

+1 on what Longcruise said. The bullet needs to be only .002 shorter than the cylinder. A good roll crimp keeps the bullet from "Bullet Jump" which will tie up the gun and the cylinder will have to be removed. Most times the double crimp groove is for loading bullets for a rifle and pistol both. You would have to check to see what will work in your gun. Vernier calipers are a big help.
Lyman has a cast load book that is helpful.

That is a website that is very helpful also.

OAL is somewhat meaningless on the 45 Colt. As the others said, use the crimp groove. You do need to be aware of loading data that uses a long nose bullet however. If the bullet you are using protrudes farther into the case you will get very high pressures with that data.

If you don't have the Brian Pearce articles on loading the 45 and the 270 SAA hit me with a PM and your email address and I will send you the pdf's.

I had Veral Smith at LBT make a mold for my Super blackhawk that had the front of the WLFN right at the front edge of the cylinder. He can do the same for your gun as long as he knows what it is. He might even have one in stock.

Great molds! I have about 25 molds for modern pistols and rifles as well as ML and BPC. His is the best of the lot.

Yes They are some of the best there is. And Veral does know what he is doing. By the way Congratulations on your selection of the WFLN probably the best bullet design in the world.
Curious of what grain are they dropping?
