454 Casull ??

Had one, sold it. Wanted an Encore more than the Taurus. I had the Raging Bull with 6.5" ported barrel. It was loud, but relatively mild (considering the caliber). Felt recoil was less severe than a Ruger Vaquero .44 Mag. Never did do any true accuracy tests on paper, but at about 50 yards I could usually get all five shots into three inches or so if I had a pretty steady rest. That's with open sights, I'm sure with a scope you could do that at 100 yards. Unfortunately I didn't get to shoot anything large with it (jackrabbits only), but I'd wager that it would have no trouble with any game animal in this country at reasonable revolver ranges.

That's about all I know about that. If you get a .454 and want to start reloading, let me know. I have a couple hundred rounds of brass (mostly once fired) and a hardly used set of Lee carbide dies I'd part with.

I've shot the Freedom Arms and considered it absolutely brutal. Hideously more violent than my 44 mag.
I don't know what you plan on hunting or think you might encounter while carrying the 454. I won't subject myself to the recoil, the 44 mag is enough for my needs.

I was discussing this issue with a pistolsmith who owns the above mentioned Taurus - he says the Taurus is a pussycat in comparison to the FA. He really fired on the FA grip frame layout.

I've shot the Freedom Arms and it shot sweet. I have a .44 Super Redhawk that I shoot ACCURATE Max loads in, and I didn't think the .454 was much worse.

If I could afford an Alaskan Brown Bear hunt; that is what I'd be using.

The .454 is definitely not a gun for the recoil timid shooter though.

I've shot both the ruger and the taurus. The taurus was traded in on the ruger. The .454 is not your everyday plinker but as a big game pistol it is hard to beat. The taurus has a ported barrel so there is less recoil, but the ruger is the better gun.

I own both the Ruger and the Taurus. There is no compairsion with recoil, the Ruger is at least double the Taurus. As for accuracy, my groups with the Taurus are less than 1/2 the size they are with the Ruger and I have far less fliers. I think that is due in part to the louse trigger on the Ruger. I do plan to install a new trigger spring in the Ruger befor I put them side by side on the bench for a real compaitsion. I like both guns, but I think that the Taurus is by far the better gun., and I have always been a big Ruger fan and still own 3 Black Hawks.

The first 454 I owned was a taurus, it was ok but those port's would deaffen you while hunting. I swapped it for a no.1 45/70. Then I ordered a Freedom Arms. The FA is a little more bruttal in recoil, but it is more accurate. At 25 yards I've shot several groups that hug all 5 in .75 inch, with hornady 240 mag xtp and 36grn of h110. There well made, tight fitting, but very pricey. If I had it to do over again I would go with a blackhawk in 44 mag, these will shoot as well as most of us can in the field, and have enuff power. I've not had the chance to shoot anything big yet.I killed a bobcat at 12 step's with it(runt the fur haha), and I've killed a few prairie dog's, 4 rabbits, and several squirels, it done the job on them just fine.lol

I love the .454. My Taurus with the ported 8 3/8in. barrel is very accurate and with those large rubber grips with the distenct red line tame the recoil. Mine is topped with a Leopould 2-8*32 scope. Does a number on deer out to 150yds. Love it but if its too much gun try the New Redhawk in the Ruger .480. That is the best big bore revolver I've ever shot. It's got about just as much power but easy on the hands.

I've used my FA .454 on one Alaska Bull Moose & 2 Sitka Blacktail deer. A hunting partner of mine has the same gun and has taken a moose, few deer, & number ground squirrels and marmots. Another friend carries his for back up while hunting and once used it to put down a wolverine. Let me say this for all of us, the .454 is impressive on game in the field!!! That said, I wouldn't own the .454 if I didn't live/hunt were big brown bears roam. I'd get a strong .44 mag or .45 colt. One last thing, I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THE FREEDOM ARMS no matter what caliber, you'll NEVER regret buying the best!!!

I own the Ruger super redhawk and am quite satisfied. I shoot factory win 300gr. They thump pretty good but not enough to make me get rid of the gun. A lot of my friends were quite impressed with the raw firepower that it possess's.
