.460 S&W

anybody shoot/have one?? I have shot a super redhawk .454 casull and was wondering how much of a difference the recoil is. Seems like a pretty interesting caliber, and I like the versatility of being able to shoot 3 different calibers in the same gun. Might have to pick one up sometime!

I have a 460 in an Encore handgun, the recoil is very similar to a 454 with a little more rearward thrust. I would rather shoot it than a 44 magnum with all the barrel whip.

I have one. Had it a year now. It is the S&W with the 8 3/8" barrel that comes with two muzzle breaks. It is the Whitetails Unlimited model with "Idaho" on the barrel. I have it topped with a Weaver 4X handgun scope.

With full blown 460 loads, it is not for the faint of heart. While not painful, the blast is, well, attention getting to say the least. When it goes off, you'll wonder if did not just try and kick start a land mine. 50 grains of H110 going off in a handgun is all you think it will be plus some. If you forget your muffs, you will be spending your hard earned money soon at Miracle Ear. You have been warned.

But fun to shoot? You bet. If you want to turn heads at the shooting range this will do it. And if you want some lighter action, even heavy 45 Colt loads are simply nothing at all after the mighty 460.

I did not have a use for mine- just wanted one. I dont think that I really needed any more reason than that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A friend of mine has a S&W 460 and I am really impressed how it shoots and feels. I also have a Ruger Super Redhawk 454 with a 9 1/2" barrel and it has more recoil than the 460. Like Sam said the 460 seems to have more of rearward "push" than a muzzle jump. This 460 was the first hunting revolver my friend bought and after shooting it he shot my 454 and said that he definately prefers his 460 over my 454.

I have the Performance Center 460 XVR Hunter 12" w/out muzzle break. Because of size and grip design recoil is very manageable.

With a 240gr bullet and a muzzle velocity of 2200fps it seems to have less recoil than my Ruger Hunter Bisley .44mag with 300gr at 1200fps. Now muzzle blast is a different story.

I have not shot any models that have the muzzle break.

I hesitate to shoot this in the field without heariing protection even this model without the muzzle break.

Unless money is no object you will seriously consider reloading. It cuts cost in half or more over factory ammo.

Also this model has sling swivels for good reason. So it is not as packable as a smaller framed pistol but if that doesn't bother you than go for it.

I had a chance to take a spike with it this year at 6oydrs and it performed as expected. DRT with complete penetration. Hopefully it strikes again during our late doe season.

I am very impressed with this gun and round. Very accurate, I have no problem hitting an 8" plate at 200yrds with a full cylinder and a steady rest, scoped of course.

Also the added benefit of chambering 45 colt and 454 casull gives you plenty of options.

sweet, thanks for the info. my buddy bowhunts for grizzlies quite a bit during the fall when they are getting into our fish at the hatchery, and I back him up with a 12 gauge, but it would be nice to have a little bit of extra insurance!! I have always been interesting in hunting with handguns also.

You want backup for the 12 gauge? Then pack another 12 gauge! A nice big fat 1 1/4 oz slug is still better than any 460 or 500 load IMHO. Im not saying that the 460 wont do a number on big bear because it will, but if I had one of those things coming after me with intentions of running me through this digestive system, then I want more than a handgun, I dont care HOW big it is! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

yeah, im not worried about the 12 not doing what it should. I am just looking for a handgun that I can hunt with also. I do a lot of hiking also and it isnt uncommon to come up on a moose with calves. Almost guaranteed in the area I am in during the summer. Another reason is I just want a big caliber handgun and I will use any excuse I can to justify it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
