How many of you shoot 55gr bullets from a 1/8 twist barrel ? Any complaints ? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I am. No complaints at all. Killed two coyotes this week with my new to me D-tech 1/8 twist. Shooting 55 grain V-max Ultramax Cabela's bulk ammo.

How's the new 55 gr Vmax working out?

I shoot 55 ballistic tip Ultramax, but I get an exit on every one, & a few runners & spinners... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm told the V-max is better by far.

Thanks, Barry

BTW, all I have are 9 twisters....4 of them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bbar,
I shoot nosler ballistic tips & v-max, both in 55gr.
It is very rare that I get an exit on coyotes, almost never.

I killed 5 cats last year and only had 1 exit. Out of 25 predators shot last year with the round the only "blow up" that I had was on a small red fox, everything else had minimal damage and all were DRT.

I get exits even at 300+ yards with the ballistic tips.

Have not tried the VMax yet.

I wish Barnes would make the VG in 55 grains.

I feed seven .223 rifles, and five of them get 55gr bullets as a regular diet.

I use the Ballistic Tips for ammo that I want/need penetration with. The BT's have a thicker, tapered jacket, with a solid base. They will punch through a 'yote or feral dog, even at long~ish ranges.

I use V-Maxs for ammo that I want to come apart fast.

I have also used Sierra BlitzKings too, but I haven't figured out which opens faster - the V-Maxs or the BK (for the same weight).

Carry on guys, my question was the bullet and the twist rate.

I've ran 40's, 50's, 52's, 55's, 62's, 69's, and 75's via an 1-8" tw. 223AI. I have no acc. issues even with the little 40's moving at 3900+. You should be just fine with the 55's. The 1-8" tw is a very versatile twist rate in the 223's in my experience; I'll never build another 223 that is twisted any slower.

My Tikka in 1 in 8 shoots 40's thru 60's well, I have some heavier ones but I would assume that they would shoot well also. I havent had a chance to try the 69 grn Sierras yet.

Seem to be working pretty good. Honestly, neither of the coyotes I shot this week with my D-tech were clean kills on the first shot but that was completely my fault, not the gun or the bullets. Poor shot placement, plain and simple. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Once I was able to finish them, I was probably to close to really judge bullet performance.

Yup, Armalite had match uppers on sale for $440 complete. Lothar Walther triple lapped barrels 20" with a brake. Too good to pass up. Ordered it Friday and they are off sale now. How are you feeling ?

All my .223 except one bolt gun are 1 in 8 twist. In my opinion it is the best to use. They generally shoot more types of factory loads with better accuracy than 9 twist barrels. They also shoot 40gr loads really well too.

Complete upper? If so, looks to be a good buy.

Say, one of my Bro's bought a 16" Bull HB stainless DPMS some yrs back. I don't recall the barrel twist, thought it was a 1:8?. That rifle was a tackdriver, useing [factory loaded]50 & 55gr Ultramax BT's.

I used 1:9 twist 20" Bushmaster V-Match, liked it well.

Yeah, that large brown, would like to kill him. If he's still around this season. He's eluded me for 3 seasons. A trophy for sure. Regardless, there are a couple other one's, pushing 50 lbs over that way.

Kirby, yup complete upper and it arrived today ! I'm letting some bore solvent soak in it for now. Looks very good. Friday was $440 now $550. I'm happy. Yah we'll go after Brownie for sure.

Speaking of 55gr. All I ever used was factory ammo. Winchester 55gr Silver Ballistic-Tip, being my favorite of the 55's. Good thumper out to 300yrds or so. Past that lack's some thump.

Also used the 55gr Remington SN. Not as accurate, but on exits didn't make a fist sized hole. Decent fur bullet.
------------
Spotted a napping coyote just over the 1/2 mile fenceline some yrs back. Was making my stalk plan on a distant far away hilltop. Here comes the County Assessor & his new-guy, learning the ropes. They wondered what I was doing, sitting atop of a high hill. I told them I was going to kill a coyote way out there.

They asked to watch the hunt. I pointed out the distant speck. Loaned them my binocs for viewing from atop a hill a mile away. They watched me stalk & crawl in to thump that coyote & drag her back. They both said, that was the coolist thing they ever saw.

Was prepared to shoot prone, suddenly coyote stood & stretched...Bang.
55gr, SN Remington through the front upper ribs, exited out the left shoulder blade = 2" hole. Not to shabby. She dropped like a ship anchor /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's cool. I'd like to do more stalking. I know I can walk slow enough now that I'm getting older. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You will grow to curse me this Winter snowfly, LOL!.

A couple Winter's ago, I had to carry 1dogs rifle back from a long stalk in deep snow. He tossed/hacked-up his cookies on a couple stops on the way back, from exhaustion. Wished I had a video camera that day. I still remind, that old lunger on occasion. Priceless /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
