50 gr vs. 55 gr bullets

I recently was waiting to order some Midway USA dogtown .224 cal bullets for reloads in my .223 and 22-250. Mostly for the 250 I was watching for the 55 gr soft points. I received an email they were in stock-then out of stock- then in stock. I was able to make a purchase of some and realized after I paid I bought the 50 grain bullets.

What do you think as far as the 250 goes. Will I have problems with them or should I just slow them up a little. My 250 is new and I have only shot the 55 gr out of them in the Hornady soft point.

Will I be disappointed in the 50 grain?
Should I eat the ridiculous shipping fees and send them back (500 count)

Or do any of you re-loaders have a good mix for a 250 with that bullet.

I think you will be alright with the 50gr. I shoot 55gr Sierra Gamekings out of my 250 with good luck. When I was working up different loads, I shot some 50gr. Nosler ballistic tips and they shot fantastic out of my rifle. I have a Sako A7 1:14" twist.

I think you will get better and more information from some of the other more experienced reloaders on here though.

I suppose it depends on what you plan on shooting with them also. I would rather go with the 55gr for coyotes than a 50gr. If you are loading that many rounds, maybe you are shooting prairie dogs. 50gr would work fine for them.

i myself prefer 55gr bullets, i think they are ideal in the 22-250 but lots of people swear by the 50s. you will be perfectly fine. work up an accurate load, the speed will be there and dead dogs will be the result.

happy shooting

If you like a ball powder in your 22/250, win 760 will shoot those 50's very accurately with a fed 210 primer.

Also, R#15 is super accurate with the 50's. I killed lot of coytotes with the 50g Sierra Spt, and also the 45g Spt which is a high velocity bullet...speed kills with a bullet that is tough enought not to detonate on the surface and the 45g Speer Spt is such a bullet.

Glad to hear it ackleyman! As I looked at a bunch of different sources for load data, I decided I would try Varget with the 55BK's I have now, and Reloader 15 with the 50's. H380, RL15, and Benchmark - seemed to all produce best velocities with the 50's in a 22-250. I didn't have any H380 on hand and it appears to be a ball powder where I actually like bigger grains as I measure all of mine one by one anyway. And Benchmark - well, I use that in 204 rugers but there seemed to be some out there who thought it might push pressures up more in a larger 250 case. So I'm going with Reloader 15 with some 50BK's and 50V-MAX's I had left over from my early 222 reloading days.

Lawdog330, I'm loading 50BK's with Reloader 15 & CCI BR-2's at 2.350" this weekend for starters, as follows:

35.0
36.0
36.2
36.4
36.5

I've been shooting 52 Berger Match Target hollow points with 36.5 of Varget & Fed210's at just over 3,600fps.

If any of these charge groups look good, I'll repeat and move on up then chrono'ing as I go. But I think solid 3,800fps performance ought to be achievable with this RL15/50 weight combo, even out of my 24" barrel.

I had a great result with the 50gr Vmax and was shooting .3 MOA with 36.42gr Varget in my 22-250 TC Venture Predator.

I have though been trying out the 53gr Vmax because the groups are a little better in both the 223 and 22-250. I can slow the bullets down a little (cutting down on pelt damage) yet because of the higher BC they shoot flatter.

LD, I shoot 50 gr Nosler BT's out of my 250. It shoots them real good. I use H380 powder. 39.6 grs 50 gr nosler bt with CCI LR Primer. Shileen SS Match barrel 26 ". This is a custom gun but this load shoots real good out of my rifle. It shoots good out of factory rifles also and is a Hot load so work up if you use it. It also shoots V max and Sierra Blitz- Kings good. I' m sure there are better loads but if it ain't broke don't fix it and coyotes won' t know the difference between 50 and 55 grainers. Good Luck to You

Thanks all, I appreciate the response.

I think Ill keep the bullets, given the difficulty trying to buy any components for .224 cal.
