I pretty much can only find 200+gr 50cal muzzlerloader bullets locally...anybody use lighter bullets to hunt deer with...what sizes can be found that are lighter and where might I buy some?

I tried the .44 cal 180gr. XTP and 180gr. Sierra JHC one time. Had much better results with the .45cal MMP black sabot and heavier bullets though.

Your going to have a hard time getting the light bullets to group, if at all. Dead center use to offer bullets as light as 175g. I probably have some left along with 185g and 195g, which none give consistant groups.

When you get below 240gr. 44cal. the bullets are pretty short and more likely to tumble. I've read a few post that some fellas are having good luck using the .40cal. 200gr. w/t Harvester 50/40 sabots.

In my 50cal. Optima, I shoot the 44cal. 240gr. XTP, Harvester CR sabot, w/85gr. of BlackHorn, avg. 1725FPS. Nice light load that will take a deer down. 3 shot, 2" groups at 100yd. are normal and occasionly get em' all in at an inch.

Lot of good ML info here:

Ever thought about a Round Ball and a patch, they have quite a history of working very well.

I use a 310gr. 44 cal bullet with sabot and 100 gr. Of triple seven works great for me. I only take shots maximum 150 yards with my muzzleloader though.

I have been shooting Barnes XPB .44 cal 200 gr bullets with MMP sabots over Blackhorn 209. The all copper bullet is actually longer than a 240 gr .44 cal jacketed lead bullet and has been shooting well for me with 100 yd three shot groups about 1.5-2"

I should get a chance to try them on a deer in about a month when the KS muzzleloader season opens.

You did not mention your rifle or it's twist rate. That can make a difference.

I got excellent accuracy shooting 180 .429 hollow points and cast 255 grain lee wadcutters out of a TC "Hawken" with a 1/48 twist. The 180 grainers were cloverleafs at 100 yards with barrel mounted iron stock sights loaded over 90 grains of ff goex in a Hornady green sabot. Ninety grains of pyrodex RS worked pretty much the same. The 180s chronoed at just over 2,000 fps.
