55gr Speer SP's

I have a 1/8 twist 223 Wylde. Tried a batch of BLC-2 last night and results were not stellar. Started at 25Gr and worked up in 3 grain increments. COAL was 2.18 as I heard it was better to load these short.

Can anyone mention a powder that works good with this bullet?

I like Speer bullets, never used the 55gr SP but all I've used have worked just fine loaded just off the lands, no big jump. The 52gr HP FB Varmint is one of my all time favorites from 222R to 22-250. I'm liking the 40gr HP TNT in the 20 Pracrical also, and the 90gr HP TNT in my 6.5x58R Sauer re-sized from .264 to .260

I'd try loading them as long as you can without jamming them in the rifling.

Not at my table right now but I believe that in the SPeer manual 25 grains was on the low end.

Just wondering if I should switch to another powder or keep playing with this one.

Yep, 25g is light.

I shoot 26.5g of Win 748 with thousands out of a 14twist bolt gun. They are on the softer side, and when in an ar, I shot them at max mag length with 26.0g of 748. Everygun is different.

I picked up a couple thousand of these on a really good sale and have tried several combinations with both Benchmark and RL10X and CCI/FC match/RP 7 1/2 primers. I also intend to try H322, but haven't thus far. The three rifles I tested them in were all ARs sporting good aftermarket barrels that will generally shoot under MOA (20in Shilen Hp profile, 18in Wilson Combat SPR, and a 16in Mcgowan HBAR). Unfortunately none of them will shoot this particular bullet under 2 inches at 100 yds. I've not tried them yet in my Rem 700 SPS 223 but I'm not optimistic... As AWS mentioned, the 52 Speer Hp is excellent and will do sub MOA in all of my ARs, but this 55 SP just isn't working out with any of my rifles so far.

I use CFE 223 with 55 gr sp, 26.9 gr, I don't have my book handy but I believe it's a mid level charge.

27.5g blc2 and any 55g bullet in all my rigs all print under an inch at 100yds.
Sounds like you have an AR15, go to 2.250" col.

My standard plinking load for everything 55gr. is 26.5 gr. of Varget, but I'm getting my best groups from Benchmark. I just got a bunch of these and Speers 52 grainers that I need to work loads up for. I'll also be trying 8208 as it's showed good results with a few other bullets.

Maybe I should increase the length. There would n't be much bullet in the neck but should be enough.

I have great results with V-Max 55 grain at 2.22 COAL.

I use the 52 grain Speer with 25.0 grains of 8208xbr with great results, but have not tried the 55 grain in my 1/8 twist wylde chambered AR.
OAL 2.230
CCI 400 primers

The 55gr sp Speer is not a tack driver, but it is a very functional bullet at a great value. I buy them in the 1000rd box.
For general plinking and break in they are very useful.
I currently shoot them with IMR-4320, TAC, and CFE-223 all with acceptable performance. They are not a Sierra, and they won't shoot with a plastic tip bullet. Take them for what they are, and they are a great bullet. Very useful.

I use CF&E on the 55gr Speer. Load mostly like the above CF&E loaders. They shot very well out of my 223 Howa. I was trying them for coyotes but didn't like the results, so I just used them on P.D.'s. Cheap to shoot and my were very accurate using CF&E.
