580 series mini14, scope or no scope?

I put a scope on a mini once....... All it did was prove how truly inaccurate that rifle really was. If your happy with it now and you can hit stuff with it using open sights, leave it that way and go hunting.

Was your rifle a 580 series or a older model? I have been hearing that the new model are much better in accuracy. I do like shooting it open site so I might just leave it alone. thanks

Thankfully it wasn't mine, It belonged to a close friend and it was an older one.

I admittedly know nothing about the newer ones, nor have I ever heard anything good or bad about them which kinda makes me wonder.....

I had a scope on mine, Ive got the "tactical model" ie it has the ugly flash hider.

mine shot fair enough, it didnt put one hole on top of the other but I wasnt expecting that it could.

For hunting, an optic of some sort never really hurts.
I just happen to take mine off for some reason and havent put it back on, may never i kind of like having the open sights.

Try both and see what YOU prefer

Good luck

My experience with an older Ruger Mini 14 mirrored that of Furhunter exactally. I scoped mine and realized that this was by far the most inaccurate gun I have ever owned. Now this is from a big Ruger fan. Love my single action revolvers, Mk2 22 bull barrel, and my old tang safery Model 77 in 30-06. I still regret selling an old model 77 bull barrel in 243 as it was the most accurate production gun that I have ever owned.

When Bill Ruger was interviewed one time he stated that the Mini 14 was "An expensive plinker". Believe him. If you want to burn up a lot of ammo in a short time, the Mini 14 will do that. With the gun I had anything smaller than a cantalope at 100 yds was pretty safe.

So, with all that being said, I would not waste my time, money, or ammo on scoping a Mini 14.

Put a big red dot sight on it and have fun.

I've heard some guys say that the new ones are much more accurate, but once bitten twice shy for me.

I mounted a Bushnell MP t-dot on mine. I use this setup for walking ditches. The t-dot is great for quick calculations of lead. It is good out to about 150 yards and I have killed coyotes with it. Nice compact, light, quick handling rig that does not need handling with kid gloves. I'm happy with it. Shoots better groups than most will tell you also. Quality ammo makes a huge difference.

The new ones are pretty accurate. I've had a few of them and the best shot 1 1/2" at 100 yards the worst probably 3". I feel this is similar accuracy to my AR15 carbines in the same price range. The nice thing about the mini is the easier maintenance. I like a scope on mine and usually put a compact 2-7 on them.

It was't meant to be scoped. You'll likely be disappointed with the accuracy once you scope it, and eventually regret putting in the time/effort to do it. Leave it iron sights.

I had one built by ASI and I've used a 1.5-4x and now have a 2.5-10x scope with turrets on it.

Make sure the scope rings are loctited and also sitting flush with the receiver. Mine would tighten up and not be flush giving me issues.

I can't shoot this rifle like my others prone. It requires my left hand to hold the forearm of the rifle. When I shoot it like this it'll go sub moa at 300yds. Got a custom turret(masking tape) that is dead on out to 550yds.

I like mine but I had a learning curve with it.
