5mm Remmy

I was at my local Army/Navy story today and saw some ammo for a 5mm Rem. Anybody have any info or reviews about this round? I havent even looked it up or anything, just kinda curious. Looked kinda mean..

Yeah I know its an old round, I thought it went out of production back in the 80s, but the store had 1000+ rounds, so I was just kinda curious

There are a couple of firearm companies that are bringing the chamber back into production...You might want to do a Google search for them..

The 5mm Remington came out in 1970 the mod 591 clip fed and the 592 tube fed. At the time it shot one kind of ammo from only one marker Remington, it was the 38gr. Power lokt HP at 2,100fps it had 372ft.lbs on K/E. no one is making or going to make rifles or pistols for the 5mm. The Mexican company call Centurine Ordinance is making ammo its a 30gr. SPHP at 2,300fps. and they also make a 30gr.HP at around 2,400fps from what I hear.I had 3 5mm rifles through the years shot the Rem ammo and the new stuff even shot the Center fire conversion. I could not see any difference in killing power between it and the 22 magnum so the 5mms went down the road! Remington had pressure problems with the 5mm thats why it was droped after only 3 years, ammo was made until 1984. I called CCI and Remington about coming back out with ammo and they said not a chance in [beeep]!

If they would make the Centerfire version again in an action like the CZ 452 or 527 it would be a hit. Yet they haven't. It's a nifty round I have the Hornet version of and it's quite the round. Adam

I've had mine since 1970, or so. I've shot a lot of stuff with it, very accurate. I now have 199 rounds of the original Remington ammo left, and use it mainly for fall turkey hunting. Hopefully, after this weekend, I'll have 198 rounds left

Like I said I wasnt crazy about the 5mm Remington, but if I was, and couldnt live with out the 5mm, I would go with the 20 squirrel. Its a much better round and you can reload for it. And because you use 22 hornet brass to make the 20cal squirrel you would have and end less supply of brass! I made my own brass for the 5mm conversion and it shot the 32gr V-max at around 2,200fps very accurate and very deadly.

The problem for us Georgians is the state's stupid #@%&!! rimfire law for bobcats and foxes. We can only use a .22 cal or smaller rimfire on them. The 5mm definitely maxes us out, whereas the conversion would be illegal.

Is there a reason for that stupid law? Here in IN you can use anything humane to kill coyotes, foxes, etc. Which is pretty much any round haha. A guy I hunt yotes with uses his 30-06....

Our best guess is that they didn't want people shooting bobcats and foxes from deer stands, thus cutting down on the #'s taken each season. We have no limits on bobcats and foxes, so I guess maybe they're trying to save them for "serious" hunters of those species. Our shot size for shotguns is also limited to #2 or smaller. The end result is, when I go predator hunting during bobcat/fox season, I pretty much have to decide ahead of time whether I'm going for yotes or others. For yotes, anything is OK.

I think a rimfire is OK for foxes, but inhumane for bobcats. They're tough little buggers.

I have used a .22 Mag on yotes at 100 yeards just fine. I dont know Id use a .22 LR at that distance but at like 50 yards that should be fine.

I just went out and bought a .223 so I dont have to think if my bullet can reach that far, it WILL reach that far ha

That would be my guess too since Cats and Fox are generally classified as "Furbearers".
Ain't saying it's right or wrong, just saying.

My experience has been that 22WMR is plenty for Cats, but as usual, shot placement and distance are critical.
Few people go to the trouble to look up the anatomy of a Cat, but if they did they would see that the vitals are located differently than those of a K9.
Not pointing fingers at anyone, but it sure helped me when I realized the difference.

Back on topic,,, the 5mm would only interest me in the CF version, and even then, not very much.
Course, I'm one of the biggest 22WMR fans out there, so I'm a little biased.

In Georgia, bobcats and foxes fall under the category of "small game", same as squirrels and rabbits, when it comes to firearms. The only furbearer license we have is for trapping.

I just bought some new rounds for my dads 591 earlier today. I had to shoot it to see how they shot. I didn't touch the scope, which was zeroed for the old Remington 38gr. rounds.

The highest hole was the fouling round, and the one next to it is because of me moving. The other three I had a solid hold. It was only at 50yds because I didn't have a clue where the bullets were going to go.
