Within the next couple weeks I'm going to be recieving a European rifle that's chambered in 6.5-284 Norma. I was looking at bullet and brass availabilty on the net when I stumbled into a ammo section that listed 6.5-284 Winchester, and there where warnings that the ammo wasn't to be used in rifles with the Norma chambering. Can anyone with any experience tell me what gives?

alls i can say is good for you.thats a hell of a cartridge.long flat flyer.
might want to try 6mmbr.com, they like that caliber.

It should accept the Lapua 6.5x284 factory brass - which is the best. If the Lapua brass is tight, then use the Norma.

If you are not familiar with this cartridge, it would be wise to take it a knowledgeable gunsmith (if you can find one), not a parts changer... and if you are new at reloading, get some help from someone with experence to get you started with it.

I shoot this gun. It was difficult to get Lapua and Norma case's at a affordable price, or even obtain them. So I went for some win 284 brass and necked them to 6.5 in a forming die. I then neck sized to .294 collet die. And No problem when I used a 120g bullet for the break in. When I loaded the 140 g bullets the case sprang back to .298, and could not close the bolt. The lapua and Norma brass are great. I am sure the fired Win brass in the test bullets are fine being fire formed.

H4831sc and MRP are the powders to use. 130-142gr pills in an 8 twist tube. You may find that your load ladder will need to be run at longer ranges. My pills don't go to sleep until after 300yds.

I am running a 6.5x55AI which is almost the balistic twin of the 6.5x284.

Use Lapua brass,..it is the best.

I believe the confusion with the Norma in the name is just that Norma established the first SAAMI production specs. for the 6.5x284. The WIN in the name came from the parent cartidge, but was not an official standard.

great caliber. we kill ground hogs and deer with it at over 1000 yards. my friend just flattened an antelope with this caliber at 750 yards. i use lupua brass when reloading.
