6.5 Caliber Coyote Bullets

I recently sold my last two 6mm guns, with plans to build another 6x47 Lapua. That may be on the back burner, not sure, as I have a barrel blank on order.

In the mean time, I have a 6.5x47 Lapua built on a 700, Brux barrel, McMillan stock, with a Nightforce on top. With thermals taking most of my interest, I thought maybe on pursuing the light bullet option in 6.5.

The four in mind are:

Hornady 95 grain VMax 1.105" long .361 BC

Hornady 100 grain ELD-M 1.240" long .385 BC

Lapua 100 grain Scenar 1.252" long .424 BC

Sierra 107 grain Tipped Machking 1.205" long .455" BC

Anybody have direct feedback on any or all of the above?

I'll assume the 95 will be the fastest & messiest.

The 107 SMK, with that BC wins downrange, and the 77 counterpart has a good following with the deer/antelope crowd, so hopefully will carry over.

Scenars are generally a little tougher.

Hornady's generally the easiest to find in stock.

Hide welfare is not a concern at this point.

While not on your list, I use the Speer 90gr TNT in my 6.5 Grendel and 6.5x58R Sauer(sized to .260).

I must have missed that bullet when I looked at the Speer offerings.

It could be a contender, as a flat base is an advantage for seating short bullets vs boat tails.

I looked at the Hammers as well.

I have a fantastic load with 130 Bergers at 2820 as my deer load.

Last year I worked up a comparable load with Nosler 129 LR Accubonds for the off chance I wanted a "tougher" bullet over the Bergers for the possibility if elk were to be on the menu.

I also figured the Hammers would/could take the place of the Bergers as a dual coyote/deer bullet, except that dismal BC for distance shooting.

This is what I got with my Savage MSR Hunter 18 inch 6.5 Creedmoor and Hornady Varmint Express 95 grain V-MAX. (BC .365)

5R / 8 twist barrel

Posted speed on the box: 3300 FPS

6 rounds @ 100 yards

I was shooting 95 grain V max out of my Savage 18" MSR hunter. If I remember right they were running 3000 and didn't expand at all. I shot 4 or 5 coyotes with it and they all ran 30 or 40 yards. I'm sure a longer barrel would change things.

The 90 gr. Nosler Varmageddon is pure death on coyotes out of my 6.5 Grendel. I tried 100 gr. Sierra HP's first, and then Speer 90 gr. TNT's. Both gave similar results in that no coyotes made it out of the field, but too many ran, jumped and made a racket before going down. Once I switched to the Varmageddon's, the running and jumping stopped. Most dropped like rocks.

Two shots at 60 yards - the distance to my bait site.

Thanks for all the insight guys.

Due to an odd turn of events, I just bought back two 6x47 Lapuas that I sold 3 years ago.

I still had the brass from both guns tucked away, as well as my load data, so the 6.5x47 stays in the safe for bigger quarry.

Yep, Varmageddons in 6.5 are extinct. Hard to say when they may become available again.
