6.5 Grendel or 300 Blackout?

Getting an AR 15- .223 but I was also looking at adding a beefier upper.
Either a 6.5 Grendel or 300 Blackout. It would be primarily for hunting larger game, Hogs, or Deer.

"Thinking" the barrel would be 16". But open to suggestions

Suspecting I would not do much sub-sonic.

What would you go with and why?

Added question: Many of the blackouts I see via Youtube are suppressed. Not sure why?
Thanks for your input!

Blackout round are subsonic.
Subsonic rounds work the best with suppressors.
We have a Grendle 18" barrel I think, it's the boys gun.
He kills a lot of deer with it.

All 300 Blackout rounds are subsonic? I thought I saw both, but could be wrong?

those 2 calibers are like apples and oranges
but like the above guy said, grendel 8 days a week

Not all Blackout rounds are subsonic. They are made from 90-220 grains. They perform better in short barrels than most other rounds and obviously sub Sonic is its claim to fame.

I would go 6.5 Grendel with the 18 inch barrel. That length of barrel for a 300BO is a waste.

I was at the gun shop near me today and they had 300 rounds of grendel on the shelf and 2 boxes of blackout not many around here shoot 300. There are several of use that shoot grendel's. And I think the grendel was like 19 bucks a box for the cheap hornady stuff

For hogs and deer, the 6.5 grendel will have greater versatility and longer viable range. All in all, that is a very simple question to answer. Go grendel and dont look back.

Have both, Grendel is a Killer, 300 BO with 125 nosler great hitter also. Grendel has a lot more range than the Blackout. All depends on range you plan on shooting or hunting.

whoever told jetman that all 300 blackout are subsonic is a freaking idiot. #justSayin

if you're gonna do a blackout and really want it to perform for you - get the federal 150gr gold dots. you can spin those up to around 2000 fps with careful loading and a bunch of 1680/shooters world blackout and they're engineered to operate at blackout velocities. they also sell it as loaded ammo if you can find any right now anyway

if you cant kill a pig inside of 150 yds with one of those - its not the gun or projectiles fault.

nothing against the 125 SST which is a proven killer in the caliber, or the 110gr barnes blacktip, or its 120gr bigger brother... all 3 of which are absolute staples for the hunting crowd.

I just put together a grendel for hunting and I love it. I went with a 20" barrel but 18 would be perfectly sufficient. Don't have any on game experience yet, but it shoots very well! I will hopefully have an on game report after deer season. The hornady ammo seems to be pretty readily available and shoots well in my gun, but I would like to get ahold of some federal fusion msr if I could ever find it in stock.

I had a Rem 700 in BO. Meh! Didn't do much for me. Nothing against them just not my cup of tea. I don't have a Grendel....yet. But it will be a bolt gun when I do. My vote is Grendel.

I have had both in bolt guns. The 30x221 went down the road, the Grendel has a place in the rack. Easy soft shooter, pretty flat trajectory, mine isn’t picky on bullet or powder.

The 30x221, give me a 357 magnum.

With the size deer up your way, I would tend to think the .300BLK would be a bit anemic. I'm from Texas, where most of our deer are smaller-bodied; .300BLK still wouldn't be my choice. I've shot a lot of hogs, and it doesn't take much to kill most of them; .223 55gr FMJ has killed plenty with one shot for me.

I like the Grendel, but it is not appealing to me in an AR. I think the bolt face is a bit thin for that large rim diameter. It is a great little cartridge, and when I get time, I am building a Remington Model 7 in 6.5 Grendel for deer, coyotes, and hogs. In a bolt action, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

.300 Blackout never was particularly appealing to me, but I recently needed something small and didn't want to bother with 9mm, so I assembled a .300BLK, but standing in for 9mm is where it seems best placed to me.

For your stated purposes, I would consider 6.8SPC or 6mm ARC, too.
