6.5 rifle

I have a 6.5-284 in a 700 vsl. I am lookiging for pd rifle in 6.5 that would have a better barrel life as in PD hunting, as for accuracy. Any one got some input? I reload and have a bunch of 284 brass for this project.
A Ar in a 260-6.5 creedmore, or a bolt gun. What say you?
Thanks
Jim

You may want to also look into the 6.5 Grendel if you want an AR, or the 6.5 Benchrest if you want a bolt gun. Either should do just great with about 2/3 the performance of a 260, with substantially less powder and barrel heat.

Kaiser Norton

The 284 brass for this project will not be conducive to barrel life in the PD fields. If you want a PD gun for those long shots and want to increase barrel life and still stay with 6.5, go with a 260 rem in a bolt gun.

I have a 25-284 and a 6.5-284. Both began to show throat cutting, (using a Hawkeye bore scope) at the 125-150 round count. My 6.5x 55 swede has had 500 rounds through it and still no cutting.

Shooting colony varmints is a whole different world, if you are seriously doing it. Not many people do it seriously.
But for those who do, barrel life is a big deal. It is a pain to change barrels in less than a day.

Jack is correct. When I was eightteen I burnt a 22-250 M70 barrel in a weekend on a ranch near somewhere near sturgis SD. I was young and couldn't figure why my rifle was shooting so bad afterwards.

I'd poingt out that a "6.5 Anything" that shoots flat enough for PD's is going to be hell on barrels. Even the lowly 260 Rem can chew up a barrel pretty bad, on a dog town.

PDs don't take much killin', and it is way better if you can see the hits (it's fun to watch them fly), but it's more important to see the misses, so you can correct for the next shot.

On PDs, a .204 Ruger, a .223 (or any of the .222 family) will take dogs more effectively then anything around.

One day on a dog town will wreck a barrel in any of the "hotshots", like the 22-250, the Swift, or any of the 6.5s.

The only "big~ish" cartridge I can see on a dog town is the 6mmBR.

I'm having John at White Oak armament build me a 24" heavy barrel 6mm WOA for this. I have the complete upper and handguards, and complete lower I had sitting around. just need the barrel and gas block. Uses 6.8 SPC brass which can be purchased fairly reasonably and uses small rifle primers. Picked up 500 rounds of 6.8 spc brass from Silver State Armory a couple weeks ago, just need the barrel now to set the dies up properly for reloading.

That doesn't make use of your existing brass but at least allows you to get into a bigger caliber for PD's and use brass that isn't horribly expensive. I looked at the 6mm AR too but 6.5 Grendel brass isn't cheap.
