6.5cm,6.5x47l,308 decisions decisions

Have a rem 308 action I've been itching to build on. Can't decide on the 6.5creedmoor,lapua or just keep it a 308. I'll be shooting steel and long range paper. Also I'll be reloading for whatever I decide to do.
I would like some experienced info on the 6.5's and if they're worth it or not. Something that'll hit hard at 1000 yards (out of my choices)
Is the 6.5x47 a pain to reload for? And how's the barrel life on it compared to the creedmoor?
I've considered the .260 also but hear the barrel life is horrible....
Sorry for all the questions. Want to start my build asap!
Thanks y'all!

Either of the two 6.5's you mentioned would be a great choice for your intended purpose

I chose the 6.5x47 Lapua mainly for the Lapua case with small rifle primer and 30* shoulder
I've never owned a Creedmore, so I can't speak about those, but they have a loyal following and for good reason.

The 6.5 Lapua is insanely easy to load for.
I have one 6.5x47 and plan on one or two more I like them so well.

I'd say get a good barrel and a good smith to put it on for you and either the Lapua or Creed would serve you well.

Good luck in your endeavor

Being that the Lapua is loaded for pressures, does that cause any kind or wear problems that may arise more than a standard pressured round?
What kind of velocity and ft/lbs (roughly) will the lapua have downrange vs a 308??

Run either of the 6.5's, the improvement over the 308 is amazing. Much more "fun" to shoot. You can't go wrong with either one. I shoot the Creedmoor myself, but a good friend shoots the Lapua. No real difference, just personal preference IMO. Either is better than the 260, mainly because of magazine length issues and seating out to the lands. Jon Beanland chambered my Creed with a short-throated reamer he has, to get more barrel life before it is set back. Factory ammo won't chamber without putting it in a press and seating the bullets deeper, but since I only reload that is no big deal. And temporary, until the throat moves out.

The foot pounds of energy difference at 800 yards are about 80 more for the 6.5 lapua shooting a 139 scenar, compared to the 308 shooting a 175 MK. But that's not the thing most shooters care about, it's the 6.5 cuts through the wind way better. About 18 inches better for the 6.5 at 800 yards. That's set at a 10 mph wind at 90 degree angle. Go run the ballistics on an app on your smartphone. It's easier for you to type in the parameters. But I would go with the 6.5 x 47 as a 1000 yard shooter over the 308. Unless I was setup already to go with a 308 setup for longrange. Then I would shoot that until it needed a barrel and go to the 6.5 x 47 lapua.

Edit: those numbers are from factory loads in the app. Not reloads. So there may be better numbers with a longer barrel and handloads

lunchbox,
Is this for paper, steel or hunting?
The advice you have been is accurate.
There is a reason folks who want to be competitive don't use a 308 Win in 1K matches unless they have to.

Then absolutely forget the 308 Win.
Check out the 6XC, 6 Creed, 6.5x47 Lapua, 6.5 Creed, 284 Winchester, 7 SAUM.
Are you going to stay with a short action?

Say a 6XC @ 3000 fps with a 105 Hybrid in my conditions with a 100 yard zero has drops at 500 yards: 7.75 MOA Drop, 2.50 MOA for 10mph FV, -40.6" drop, -12.5" drift
1000 yards: 23.75MOA Drop, 5.50MOA Drift, -248.7", -57.8"
This is just a fast twist 6mm.
If you jump to a 7mm, well....

The 6.5's will give you about 300 yards range over the 308, 1/3 less drop and (more importantly) 1/3 less wind deflection. They will make 1200 easy, and out to 1400 under the right conditions. And they will do it with a little less recoil too. A 6.5 in a heavy barrel short action is a dream to shoot. All day.

Some of the 6mm are really good too, like the 6 XC, Creed, and Lapua. If just steel/paper they are worth a look for sure. But if live game is on the menu too, then I would stay with the 6.5's for more bullet weight. The 6.5's should kill pretty reliably on deer size game out to 800 or so.

I would probably take it hunting too. It's not going to be a super heavy rifle. Providing I stop drooling over MTU contour barrels lol

Yea I'm going to stick with a short action. I have one already going towards this build. I'm going to stick with the caliber a mentioned for this first. Being I've been indecisive already lol some of the 7mm are interesting though too but I need more than 1000 rounds a barrel.

Any of the 7mm will do more that 1000rounds in a barrel modus the ultra mags and the like. I've got over 3k out of my 7rem mag. I'm going to do another 708 with a 8/9 twist and see what I can do. I've got some 175s sitting to try

7 SAUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
