Varget or H4350 for a 6.5x47 Lapua? I plan to shoot 120-139gr bullets for casual medium range target shooting, maybe up to 143, and hunt with lead free 120 Hammer or 127 LRX. I don't plan to shoot real heavies.

I have a buddy willing to sell me an 8lb jug of either H4350 or Varget, but not both. So, need to decide...

I've tried both in the past, and prefer Varget over H-4350.

Go to load is with Varget and Berger 130 VLD's at 2820 in a 23" tube.

Seems PRC types greatly prefer Varget. But everybody else is 50/50 split.

H4530 appears to be compressed loads at max.

Which is somewhat dependent on chamber throating, intended bullet, and magazine confines.

I've always felt a 6.5x47 is best suited for 123-130 class bullets, and my reamer reflects that. I seat the Bergers in the lands, and my OAL is 2.750", leaving plenty of room in a 700 2.800" mag box, and not crunching powder.

Jumping on 8lb is serious commitment these days lol.

I haven't been around that round but it's pretty similar to the CM isn't it? The old standby was Varget with 120 class, H4350 with 140 class bullets. In fact that's supposedly what the original factory CM rounds were loaded with, and had the data on the box.

47 is a hair shorter, 1.850" vs 1.920", with bit less capacity, but is a better fit in a 2.800" mag box, w/o giving up much in velocity.

Here's the last one I put together for a LR plinker.

Bat action, Krieger barrel, McM stock, & NF scope.

130's at 3010, & stayed super sonic to 1550.

And the best part....it's not a ***** Crapmore.....ha ha.....

Spoke to a gentleman a while back who was a very accomplished PRS shooter and he showed me some SD's from his loads with Varget in the 6.5x47L. His print outs were showing SD's in the 2's which is within margin of error for many components Lot to lot or even individual component to individual component. I actually stocked up on it for when I finally finish mine

36ish grains of varget with the 123-130g bullets is magic, and primers make one heck of a difference.

123g Lapua Scenar is one heck of a killing bullet.

I went with the H4350, AA4350, IMR 4350, AA2700 with 139-147g bullets with Rem 7 1/2 primer, lapua brass.

At one time we could not get Lapua brass, and I formed brass from Remington 22/250 brass, the accuracy with the large primer pocket was amazing, pretty quickly got 1/2" groups at 200 yards. When using the 22/250 Brass, monitor the carbon build up in the neck with a bore scope, and a few twists with a 38 cal pistol brush will keep the necks carbon free in the barrel.

There is a "Heat Index Chart" that shows how HOT various powders burn. If you are looking at long barrel life, then choose powders accordingly. This HEAT INDEX CHART is worth educating yourself on.

Of course, if you hunt in subzero weather, then powders with Stabilizer coatings is where you want to be.

You won't be disappointed in either one. I shot a lot of H4350 and some IMR4350 in my 26" barrels (no longer have) and I shoot Varget in my 20" sporter deer rifle...
