6.8 SPC - Are you guys happy with yours?

I'm on the fence here bigtime. I want to get an AR in something other than 223 this time around and with a bit more punch. I have an extra complete lower laying around and a complete upper reciever. Just need a barrel, handguard and gas tube to finish it off.

Looking pretty hard at the Ko-tonics barrels that everyone speaks highly of on ar15.com.

I just can't get over the speed deficiency of the round. Maybe it's not a big deal and they have significantly more punch than the old .223's. A heavier version with a healthy scope seems like a fun Prarie dog blaster too.

I'd love to go with a .243 WSSM but I nearly have a complete gun already. For around 300 bucks I'd be into the 6.8.

Suggestions? opinions on the 6.8??

Thanks

That 6WOA does look pretty awesome. I have tons of .243 bullets around too. From what I'm seeing, they're getting better than .243 speeds out of it with the heavy bullets!!

Thanks for the suggestion guys!

Anything I need to look out for when building it?

What do dies run for this guy? I've been googling my butt off trying to find more info but am getting blocked because of our lovely surf control here at work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

Well.. done deal! I called and talked to John for a while. He's 12 weeks out on them at this time which gives me some time to find some brass and stuff..

I tentatively have him making me a Wilson 24" bull barrel in 1x10 twist. Going to be a heavy beast but I want it more for prarie dogs than anything.

Dan and Mike, would you recommend going with the Wilson or the PacNor barrel?

I would recommend a Shilen or Krieger, Wilsons are fine as are PacNor. Considering the cost of a custom rifle, I would use a very high quality barrel. Thats my opinion.

I just could not see any reason for the 6.8 as 75 or 77 gr .224 bullets out perform them. This is why I made the 22-68. I would look at the 6 WOA before the 6.8

I have a 6 WOA that Dan built me and I simply LOVE it!!!!!!!!!It will smack the crud out of a coyote is flat shooting and easy to reload. Dan Carey built the upper (Shilen) I got the dies from John at WOA and small pocket brass from SSA. I had a complete lower with a JP trigger laying around. Now I have a new favorite rifle..........
H-322 or H-4895 or Benchmark and a 65 or 75 grain V-Max and you are going to be a happy camper.

IO just finished a 6.8SPC build and really like this round in an AR platform. The only draw back I see is the availability of bullets heavier than 115 grain. I have a few 130 grain recipes on paper and will start loading them shortly. Hopefully this load will help me put a small dent in the whitetail population.

That being said, I have a few boxes of Hornady 6.8SPC, 110gr V-Max posted up in the classifieds (CHEAP) if anyone is interested...

The 6.8 is a 270 Winchester caliber and will shoot any bullet that will work in a 270. The heavier bullets may require a little faster twist than whats used in the 270 for the same weight bullet, like the 150-160's. I think it might have a problem stabilizing the bigger bullets at the velocity the 6.8 SPC can produce. I guess its a reloading think or do without.

Just got off of the phone with John. The barrel was in his hands. He just wanted to check with me on the decision of which chamber to go with. The 6mmWOA or the 6mmPDK which is the WOA with an improved neck. Supposed to allow more powder in the case and gain some velocity. Didn't have dies for the PDK yet though so I'm sticking with the WOA. Pretty excited!

Anyone find a favorite combo for the WOA yet? Probably looking for the 70grain bullet range.
