6.8 SPC in a 14.5" barrel ?

I'm looking to build a lightweight brush gun for deer and also double as a hog gun if I ever go on a hunt or move down south (partly making up reasons to build another upper in a bigger caliber) I was thinking of going with a 14.5" with a pinned flash hider. Any objections? It'll be a short range gun, but most that I see are 16" midlengths, so should I stick with that for velocity/300 yard (caliber's max capability) shot if opportunity arises? Would I still want to keep it a midlength gas system also?

Why would you want to loose 2 inches of barrel? Go with a 16" target crown and gain the extra velocity with the same overall length.
Also go with a mid length gas system.

Because the 6.8 SPC was designed to be used in short barreled rifles it is optimal from a 16 to 18 inch barrel. The 6.8 works very well with short barrels even down to 11 inches. Mid length gas is what works best with the 6.8 cartridge. Your rifle will just work better with a mid length than with a carbine length gas system.

do a search on short barrel rifles in 6.8

I saw a chart recently (going to make an ar pistol)
that showed many barrel lengths and various loads/velocities
really efficient cartridge, not a ton of velocity loss at all.

I shoot a contender pistol atm with a 10" barrel and have taken deer at 100-150ish yards and a bang flop at 80-90ish yds.

as long as your not planning to shoot them half a mile away I think youll be fine, although a 14.5 and a 16" makes little difference in handling imo, but we dont have trees in ND lol.
