6.8spc on a bolt gun???

I got a .277 barrel coming. Thinking I'm gonna try and make a 6.8spc out of it. My question is that the barrel is 1/10 twist. Will this be okay as from what I'm ready you need a 1/11(at least on the AR's). I'd like to shoot the 95gr barnes or the 100gr Accurbonds out of it. Also like to cut it to 18". Will all of this work out. Kind of a truck/kids gun. Also what's the deal with the different 6.8spc chambers. Is this something I need to be concerned about?

I've got two 6.8's an AR-15 and a contender rifle, and I'm looking at building a bolt gun just need a left hand savage in .223 swap out barrel and bolt face and I'm set.
Both mine are 1-10" twist type 1 chambers I shoot reloads and never missed being able to shoot combat loads.I know my rifles will shoot 115-90gr bullets very well.
I would never go to more then a 18" barrel with a 6.8

My AR-15 is a 1:10 twist(SPEC II Chamber), it is a 18"
barrel with a mid length gas post, and it shoots the
95 gr. TTSX 1 MOA, with a few groups going sub-MOA. I am
still tweaking the load to see if I can get the average
groups sub-MOA. I don't have any experience with the Accubonds.

I think it would make a fine light recoiling medium game
rifle. Stick with well constructed bullets 100 grains or
less and the ballistics are pretty flat for 200 yards or
so. Plenty of energy beyond 200 yards, but drop will need
to be accounted for.

I think that would be a sweet little rifle. My AR 6.8 is a 16" spec II chamber 1:12 twist. It shoots the 95gr TSX loads from SSA into 1 MOA, but it seems to like the 110gr bullets better.

I would think a bolt gun with a quality composite stock with a good bedding and a medium contour barrel about 16-18" long would be nice with the 6.8. I really like short, medium weight rifles kinda like the Rem LTR or a good old Model 600/660 Rem. But that is just me. I think a really light bolt rifle in 6.8 might have a little bit too much recoil for some folks.

I'll quit rambling now...

The deal with the different 6.8 PC chambers is similar to a .223 Remington / 5.56 NATO. The SPC II chamber has a .1 inch longer lead, and will handle higher pressure loads before pressure signs become evident. As far as twist is concerned it is recommended that a 1-11 to 1-12 twist be used, but a 1-10 is acceptable for high pressure loads so long as a SPC II chamber is used.
I would strongly suggest that you have your new barrel chambered in 6.8 SPC II. This is the best chambering and it will handle any 6.8 SPC loads that are available.

1-10 is standard for the .270W., it should not be an issue with the 6.8 Rem. I be more concerned about the action you are using. What action are you using with a .446 boltface? Or are you having a custom bolt made?

Good luck

Jerry

Exactly what I was going to say. The twist is fine, not a concern.

Remington made 700s and I believe maybe m7s also in 6.8.....
