60 grn V-Max Load Data for AR

Any one have some AR data for the 60 grn V-max using Varget or H335? All my manuals have listings for speer bullets only. If nothing else would like Min and a Max load. I need a safe starting point to work up from.

Also would like to hear what you guys are using for a load with either of these powders with the 60 grn V-Max.

I am loading for my Rock River Predator Pursuit.

Thanks Mike

Welcome to the Forum.

I use mostly this Hodgdon data, along with some from Sierra that is specific to the AR-15. Just fill in the search blanks with the caliber (223 Rem) and go from there.

My RRA Varmint 24, 1/8 twist, likes 24.6 grains of Benchmark with the 60 gr V-Max. I'm using Win brass, Win WSR primers or CCI BR-4s, and COAL of 2.260 in. You should note this load is listed as a max load in the Hodgdon data, so start lower and work up.

I'm in Gettysburg. Where are you in South Dakota?

Hodgdon books says Varget 25 gr.to start 27 gr.compression max.H335 22.5 start-24.0 top end.I shoot a RRA also,60 gr V-Max & Varget work very well together.Coyotes hate em.

Mike, If you will PM me your e-mail address, I'll be happy to send you the PDF from Sierra Bullets for the AR...

While they are specific to the Sierra bullets, the bullet weight will be near the same and they give several different powders they have tested. They also include an Accuracy Load and a Hunting Load.

Mike, I had some good accuracy out of 26 grs. of Varget and the 60 gr. V-MAX in a 1:9 twist Bushmaster. Here are a few groups I shot that day testing out a new trigger in the gun. All shot at 100 yds. with the scope set on 10 power. Benchmark and the 60 gr. V-MAX is another good combo to try as SodakJim mentioned earlier.

Bill I have the Sierra AR data already.I do appreciate the offer. The reason I was asking is because the sierra AR data calls for a min of 24.3 and a max of 27.1 grs of varget for a 60 gr HP. But if you look at the data for this same load using the hornady v-max Bolt gun data they call for 21.7 min and a max of 24.9. The sierra AR 60 grn HP data calls for 23.5 to 25.6 of H335 and the Hornady V-Max Bolt Gun data calls for 20.1 to 22.9 of H335. That is allot of variance and a little confusing. That is why I am asking a good starting point. I always work up with loads and I really don't want to blow up my $1200 gun.

I am curious as to how the 60 grain nosler b-tips perform with the Varget. If they shoot like the other Noslers I have used, they should shoot great. I'll be watching for your results. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Well for my 1in8 Dtech it loves 24 grains of H335 and the 60 grain Vmaxes. My last group with that load was at 100 yards leaning over the hood of my truck and went a hair under an inch for a 5 shot group. Win brass, cci Mag primers are the rest of the recipe used. I did have some good groups with varget as well but I had H335 on hand for another rifle so just stuck with that. Also the AR loves the W748 at 24.2 grains with the 52,53 and 55 grain bullets I have tried.

Mike, never be afraid to start on the "low" side. You just might find something that works much better than "normal" loads.

I have a DPMS 1:9 that just shot a 1.15" group at 200 yards with 60 VMaxs and 22.5gr of Benchmark. That powder charge is quite a bit under what would be considered max, and even lower than most would consider shooting.

Slow doesn't always equate to inaccurate. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think you're right. Most of my guns don't like the max loads but shoot very well when you start to back off a little.
