maxed out with 8208.

That's what I was wondering also.

I load 24.5 grains of Benchmark and 60 VMaxs in 2 DPMS rifles, and both are shooting .5" groups @ 2890 fps.

I can crank up the volume a bit and get over 3000, but the accuracy drops off terribly.

I want to be at 2900 fps.

I am not a speed freak by any means, In fact this is the only situation I have ever pushed it trying to get more. I usually settle in comfortably mid-range.

With the math it looks like varget or cfe 223 and a few others should get me there, was just wondering if anyone else WAS doing it already.

Just bought some CFE to give it a shot.

I could care less for getting another 100fps, I want the tightest groups possible not the fastest. Several of my loads shoot better if I back the powder off a bit. I have not had a chance to chrono my 60gr. V-Max's, but My 55gr. V-Max's chrono at 3120fps with 25.5gr. charge of H-4895

It is not about pure speed. If that were the case I would not be using 60 gr vmax. I also do not push speeds just for the sake of pushing speed. Most, if not all of my other loads are pretty mid range. I want this bullet as close to 2900 as I can get for the purposes of a particular ballistics experiment. I don't really NEED the speed, I just want it for this singular purpose. If my groups go to crap obviously my experiment has failed and I will go back to what is already working.

The reason I was looking at other powders is I also don't like to max out or over max on a powder. I like to "play it safe".

While I prefer Benchmark, AA2200 usually gives a little more velocity. Two things. 2200 is a ball powder and in the Texas heat it spikes and is temp sensitive. The other thing is you have an 18" barrel,,,, Tests are usually done with 24 inch barrels.

Houston we have a problem... YMMV

Forgot to add that with the 2200 it works better with magnum primers.
I wish you the best of luck, but with only an 18" barrel, I think it is going to be tough to get there.

As stated earlier. 10X is a Great powder. It will give you some of the best velocities and in my experience some of the best groups. In an AR it is VERY nasty. Unbelievably dirty. So dirty I stoppedusing it, but in my 6x45 bolt gun & 6BR bolt gun is not that bad. Maybe the longer barrel gives it a better burn? Maybe the deposits exit the barrel v/s thrown back in the receiver? Not sure, but if your shooting a bolt give it a try. If shooting a gas gun & you like to clean. I'm betting it will work.

SO I loaded some cfe223 and with 26.5gr(not max)I hit dead-on the speed I needed for my desired ballistics. Shot fantastic groups as well.

My only concern now is when will it do in 30 degree weather vs the 70 I shot at today.....

The cfe isn't an extreme power. Benchmark is and will get you over 3000 with ease. I like the piece of mind the extreme powers give me,as I shoot in all kinds of weather and load towards the max. When the gun likes it.

3000 fps easily out of an 18" barrel? I don't see that as being an easy venture.

I agree^^^
But for what i think he is trying to accomplish it will not make enough difference for the distance he will normaly shoot...JMO
