6BR Loads of Prairie Dogs?

In a month I'm going to Western Kansas for a prairie dog shoot....

I plan to take two AR's: .204 & .17 Remington, and for the long shots I'm planning to use my 6BR bench rifle, and would appreciate some input on bullets.

I've got a couple of hundred each of Hornady 65gr Vmax and 58 gr Vmax, but also have 100 70gr Sierra Bal Tips for example.

Any experience with the 6BR for PDs??

Thanks

George

I have used 55 V-max, 55 B-king, and 70 B-king using H-322 with great success. Seems to have a louder pop, and more destruction than same weight bullets out of a .224 bore. Must be the frontal area of the bullet that makes the difference.

Tony.

Shoot prairie dogs when you want, but a drive from your state should surely deserve better shooting than what is generally to be had around here in April. Most guys wait til Memorial Day or so when the pups and females are out and more active.

Have to agree with the above post. I go to Wyoming every year to shoot. Typically in the middle of June before it gets too hot.By then the pups are out in force.

And remember Dave, you promised me that come June you were going to do your darndest to actually shoot one or two of them. I mean, I do not actually ever get tired of showing you how it's done but I think that it is high time that you shoot of few of them yourself. If I must, I will once again give you shooting lessons this year, but if I do I hope that at least this time you will pay attention.

Not sure what you consider long range but the bullets you have listed will do fine out to about 600 - 700 yards. For real long range, the 105 AMAX is my favorite but you need an 8 twist rifle for that.

I take two 6mmBR rifles on my dog shoots. The short range rifle is a 20 inch barreled 12 twist Remington 700 chambered in the old Remington 6mmBR. I've been going to re-barrel it but it just shoots too good to mess with. I load 65 gr Vmax to about 3200 FPS. The long range rifle is also a Remington 700 but in an 8 twist 28 inch barrel and chambered in 6mmBR Norma. In that, I load 105 AMAX to about 2800 FPS.

When you start to push 600 yards, BC becomes King.
