6mm AI vs 6x284 vs 6.5x284

I have a 243 on a short action, I want to re barrel it to one of the 3 calibers, not wanting it for anything other than a backup deer or varmint rifle. If you have any experience with the above calibers let me know what you think. Thanks

Any of the three would make a great build,,,But (theres always a but right) I think a long action would serve your purposes a lttle better.

Well I will have a Wyatt's box or an AI mag, so that will take care of that. Brass is a big concern and I don't recall ever seeing good brass for the 6mm. Not the end of the world but you know.

Go with the 6.5 for a better barrel life or the 6mm for a hot rod. If you want a long range rig the 6.5 is the better choice and brass is available for that one without modification.

I don't have a 6mmAI but do have a 6mm Rem a 6-284 and 6.5-284 their isn't enough difference between the 6mmAI and the 6-284 to matter except maybe brass I use Lapua for my 6-284 and WW for the 6mm Rem you could form the 6mm from Nosler 257 Roberts or Norma 7mm but I find the WW to be fine for my purposes.
IMO they all are better suited to a long action if you want to shoot the higher bc bullets like the 105Amax.
The Wyatts extended magazine has a inside dimension of 2.995 my 6mm Rem loaded with a 105Amax at that overall length the base of the bullet is about even with the junction of the case body and shoulder and the 6-284 is just a bit shorter.
I would do a 243AI you won't give up much velocity have a little better barrel life and will be able to easily run the longer VLD's through a Wyatt's box

I can fit the 105amax in my factory mag box right now, and that's seated out to the lands. I wander if the Howa short action is any longer than the 700 short action.

Max distance for hunting?

I'm not comfortable shooting anything past 650 yet.

Sure it will if it is loaded under 2.995 COL, I just don't like alot of bullet in the case taking up powder space, my 6-284 and 6.5-284 are both single shot actions so it really doesn't matter but my 6mm Rem is a repeater I can't get to the lands with a 105 and run it through the magazine, to shoot the 105's were they shoot the best in that rifle they are jammed .005 and have to be single loaded, since its more of a heavy barreled Varmint rifle its not a big deal to me.
But if it was a rifle I wanted to hunt coyotes or deer with I would prefer it to be a repeater

There a tank of a action but I like em a lot., the 1500 is a sold piece of work.

My boss has built several rifles on the Howa actions, his 257AI and 243 AI are both on them because of the extra room in the ation. If you dont have a builder in mind call John Wickens at Wickens Gunsmithing 406-462-5618. He is very familiar with this action as well as all the others.

He will be the cheapest you will find and very good at what he does. John has been building rifles for me for about 5 yrs now. I took a job managing their feedlot operation last year, he stays pretty busy building rifles and has been doing a little work with Snowy Mountain Rifles lately. One of their owners family lives about a mile from my house, they are good also but I bet John can save you more than a few bucks on a quality build and he has a 1400 yard range we built right next to the shop.
