6mm options for coyote

I’m having a 6mm built. I’m eyeing up the 6GT pretty hard, but I’m easily swayed.

It’ll be a dedicated coyote rifle, max 300 yards distance, 20” barrel and I would love to find a bullet that has minimal damage/no exit.

What can you guys recommend for me? Share your Bullet / velocity and damage report with it

If you’re recommending something other than 6gt, just know I don’t want a cartridge that requires extra steps to load for. I want to buy components, push them together and go hunt

I shoot a 6x45 just run 223 brass in a 6x45 FL die and load cheap and plentiful brass, easy on powder and gets the job done. I shoot a 6mm ARC great little cartridge, good performance and can be built for n a compact action. I just decommissioned my 6mm-204 a little more complicated with performance rivalling the ARC. I shot a 243 for a few years and felt it was more than needed for called coyotes and traded it for a duck boat. I usually take the sixs when I'm not to concerned about pelts.

I have been shooting the 6mm ARC and it checks all the boxes that I want.

- Packs more punch than a 223.
- Suppresses very well.
-Shoots good with factory ammo.

I have two rifles. 18'' Savage heavy barrel. 20'' Howa.

I have never chronoed either. I shoot 75gr vmax loaded by Druid Hill. Their web site has them listed at an average of 2,977fps out of a 18''.

99% of the time I get a bang-flop. Small exit. If it hits a good solid bone like the spine or shoulder joint it is going to be messy.

I find most 6mm offerings will do a lot of fur damage.
With the low prices of fur, I don't care much about that.
I use a 6mm Rem and Varmageten 55 gr bullets right at 4200 fps.
That spells DEAD coyotes.

For me it’s a 243 or 6creed. Fur damage isn’t a concern for me nowdays and you’ll get plenty from those at least half the time. I mostly shoot 75 or 87 grain Vmax, just because I have a bunch.
If I was fur hunting I’d stick with my 22 250s, but we’re talking 6mm so that point is moot.
Edit to say, I’m talking bolt guns, and I have never done a 20” barrel. Nor would I.

Putting together a bolt gun in 6 GT also, waiting on the barrel. The GT uses a little less powder which should have a little less blast/recoil and is hopefully accurate. There are a few good chamberings to pick from in mid capacity 6mm. That said, I've been using a pair of AR's in 6 grendel that I've been very happy with. Shooting the 58 Vmax at 3550 and 3450 has been working well for me. Good luck on the build.

I run a 6 dasher and I have a buddy that just built a 6gt. I'm running a 108 berger at 2910fps and it's very accurate. We threw 32 grains of varget in his gt just to get zeroed and form brass to his gun and it shot .2" groups at 100 yards in the first hundred rounds. If I was going to do mine over I would do the 6gt just so I didn't have to use the mags with the spacers. The .243 definitely is a great cartridge like others have said but you'll be burning about 10 grains more powder. Not a huge difference but that's a few extra rounds from 1 lb of powder.

I think a .243 would be good for your intended purpose. I have used a Ruger American Predator in 6mm Remington on several coyotes at distances around 60-80 yards with great performance. Sierra 55 gr. Blitz Kings at 3720 fps drop them on the spot on broadside shots and no exits. A 58 gr. Vmax tore a baseball size exit, the worst I have ever had on a coyote, but the Blitz Kings have done a fine job for me. Of course broadside shots probably are easier on fur than shooting them at angles.

As AWS mentioned, the 6x45 is a good one too. I used 70 gr. Blitz Kings in that one, and 75 gr. Sierra HP’s. The HP’s generally always exited but fur damage was not bad.

As to Blitz Kings, this past season I mainly used a 25-06 with 70 grainers at 3400 fps. As unreal as it sounds, out of the 13 coyotes I shot with that load, I only had two or three bullets exit.
