6mm Remington Shooters

I was just wondering if anyone out there shoots the mighty 6mm remington cartridge. If you do, what bullets do you use? do you handload? which bullet is most accurate? is best on the pelt? I got a Ruger m77 a year and a half ago and I haven't shot a single factory round through it yet. I load 105 gr. Spear soft points and Nosler 100 gr. soft tip BTs for deer, as well as hornady 80 gr. FMJ's and 58 gr. V-Max for predators. I found out that the 58 gr. does some damage on the pelt of a fox (i knew i had that coming) so i'm only going to shoot the FMJ's in the future for those. Has anyone had good luck with the 58 gr. v-max on coyotes not exiting?
thanks,
Ben

Hea fellow 6mm shooter I shoot a 65 gr v-max with 39.3 gr H-4895 rem 9.5 primer and a C.O.L. of 3.900 I get about .400 groups at 100. I have also shot rem 100gr core locks and had 2 of 3 holes touching with the third very close. I to have a M77 NOT a MKII and it shoots awsome. I havent shot any critters with it yet but when I do I'll report back /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I built a 6mm on a short 700. It's got a 25 inch shilen and is bedded in a Mcmillan stock. I built it as a dedicated coyote rifle. I handload 70 Nosler Bts with IMR 4350 at the max load listed in the Nosler manual. I've never chrono'd it and I've only shot a few groups on paper. It shoots

Your six gun sounds awesome. When i was shopping for my 6mm, i looked all over for a Remington, but the company had discontinued them, and I couldn't find any used ones in all of northern minesota or north dakota (probably because 6mm owners don't trade in their guns.) Yours sounds like a one of a kind. do you have any pictures up on the net that you could show?
Also, for you guys shooting FMJs,
Do you ever have problems dropping the coyotes? Do they run a ways before falling when shot with the FMJ as compared to an expanding bullet?

Once upon a time there was a photo on this site of it. I have photos I could send to someone if they want to post it for me. I don't know how.

I think the last 6mm Remington did was the Varmint Laminate. They were neat rifles.

I will be having a Remington VSF that is now 308 re-barelled with 6 mm rem. I know Remington still makes a varmint rig in 6mm, but I am a lefty. Mine will be a dedicated coyote gun that I will be shooting 70-90 grain bullets through. New barrell, action trued, trigger job and bedded all at the same time. Should be a tack driver.
Ruda, what twist is your barrel? I would think I would want a 12 twist with the bullets I want to shoot?

Well, I guess I have a combination of both 25-06 and 6mm. I have had a Remington Sendero re-barreled to 6mm-06. It is nothing more than a 25-06 necked down to 6mm. I love it. I shoot 75 grain V-Max at 3621 fps. Could shoot them faster but the accuracy is good and velocity enough, so I left it there. It hits groundhogs with authority. I have killed two at 360 yards (rangefinder measured). That's not a great distance, but good nontheless. My gun will group the 75's less than 1/2" all day when I do my part. The smallest group I have fired (3-shot group) was 3/16".

Ruda1, I sent you a personal letter. I'll be glad to post the picture for you. Just e-mail it to me and I'll get it done.

Good shooting.

I have been shooting the 6mm Rem since 1971 and haven't been without one since. I loss count long ago of the Whitetail and varmints i have taken with the 6mm Rem. The rifle i now have is built on a Left Hand 700 action with a number three Select Match Shilen barrel with 1-12 twist and stocked in Six Enterprise Glass Stock. The rifle groups under 1/2 inch with the Hornady 87 gr BTHP and Win 760. The 6mm Rem is the best 24 cal you can chamber a rifle for. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a Remington 700 BDL in 6mm. I have been shooting Federal Power-Shok 80 gr. soft points. It is grouping between 1/2" and 5/8" with these factory rounds at 100 yds.

I own 2 243 Win chambered rifles.

I have used .243 since 1975.

I used to own another .243 but sold it.

I had a 760 in 6mm. Some SOB stole it!

I have never met an 'ote that could argue with a .243! Never!

The 6mm is decidedly better than the .243 win.

The 6mm REALLY RULES!

I recently bought a used 6mmVLS Remington 700. I loaded up 75grain V-Maxs in front of Benchmark powder and it does not really shoot them very well. 1" to 1 1/4" groups.

I don't know the twist rate of my rifle, but I think I may need to try heavier bullets. I will try the 85grain V-Max next.

Longdraw1970,

My barrel has a 12 twist. I knew I only wanted to shoot 70-75 grain bullets out of it when I built it. Mark Penrod chambered the barrel, fit it and trued the action. I sent him a dummy round loaded at the OAL I wanted, just deep enough to clear the magazine well.

bhuener,

I went through the same thing. I wanted to get a rifle that my wife/son could shoot, and I did not want a .243 (nothing against .243 by any means - just wanted something different - all of my buddies have .243s). I looked all over and could not find one (except for the Rem VLS but I did not want a 26" havey barreled gun).

I kept checking Gunbroker (and the other online sights), and I eventually got a Rem 700 ADL deluxe that is in like new condition.

Good luck in your search!

BTW - does anyone have a favorite bullet for the 6mm Rem that they use for deer. This year I got some 100 grain partitions for it for deer, but I ended up using my 7mm08.
Thanks!

For deer I use Nosler 100 gr. spitzer boattails that do a great job. I don't think you'll ever really need a partitioned bullet for the 6mm while hunting deer. IMO, partitioned bullets are a waste of energy on the trees on the other side of the deer.

Are there many factory 6mm loads? I assume there aren't many varmint loads anyway. It sounds pretty interesting but if you don't reload would you be better off with a .243?

I was also wondering, to those of you who are shooting 75 grainers for coyotes - What does that do to the hide? I assume the bullet exits, doesn't it? And is barrel twist keeping you from shooting smaller rounds? I haven't done too much bench work with my 58 gr. v-max, but I know the best group in my pressure series was around an inch.
Does anybody know anyone with the .244 remington? That's a gun that would shoot 55 and 58 grain bullets all day! Some of my first brass that I loaded for my 6mm was .244 brass, but I never saw the gun that first used them.
