3 groove or 6 groove? Which is better and why? Or does it even matter? Just looking at a barrel order form and curious what everyone prefers. Any info is much appreciated!
Theoretically the odd number of grooves is less disruptive to the bullet when it engraves. The land groove ratio can come into play with either. All my BHW are odd numbered. They do 3-5-7.
Which shoots better? Barrel to barrel will tell us but going in neither will kick sand in the others face 100% of the time.
To further confuse, when given the opportunity I choose 4-grove. That said, I've had several different of each & not sure I could give a good reasoning behind my preference (they all have been good) other than I've never had anything but great out of a 4-grove Krieger or Bartlien (had more than a few)...
I have shot a lot of very accurate 3,4, and 6 groove barrels.
I think that a barrel that is drilled very straight down the bore has more to do with super accuracy than the number of lands and grooves, benchrest shooters call these "hummer" barrels because they shoot such small groups on a regular basis.

No. It's more a matter of smoothness of the bore, bullet jacket material, speed down the bore an d the friction of that passage, bullet size vs. bore diameter of the lands/grooves and land shape.

Because it leaves more grooves laying around for more barrels. No sense in wasting grooves.
Well now, that makes plenty of sense.
Must be a Marlin owner.

Is that how they make micro groove barrels? They're left over grooves, meshed together?

Yep, left over from those pesky 6 groove barrels. Too small to make a good 3 groove.

3 and 5 twist ? WOW ! What bullet you shooting ?
I'm the brother. The barrel that SubpaR is talking about is my 3 groove BHW 20Practical. I shoot Hornady 32gr, 40gr vmaxes, and 32, 39 sierra's and 35gr bergers.
I cant speak for his. All I know is that he has a .223 and 6.8 ARP barrels. Not sure of the twist on each
