6x45 or grendel

Hello everyone
I am getting stuff together to build my first ar. I was going to build a grendel because I have had about 100 pieces of once fired hornady brass given to me and more to come. I have talked to black hole about the 264lbc barrel and for about 300 and 4 months wait I can get one. Or I can go 6x45. It will mostly be used for coyotes but I will probably take it deer hunting also. Which one?
Thanks
Jon

You can get a 6.5 grendel barrel right now at midwayusa w/bolt in either 16 or 18" no waiting.
I prefer the 6x45 as brass is everyplace, accurate as heck, easy to load/make brass for, good speeds with 55-95g bullets.
Midway is out of stock on the 6x45 though.

I have been doing just fine with a 16" barrel on my Grendel. My daughters and I have taken some good sized whitetails with it and got along pretty well using the factory 123 amax load on them. Broadside and quartering shots were pass throughs, head on shot was not recovered but it took out a piece of one lung, the top of the heart, and was somewhere deep in guts nearly to the hams. Accuracy has been very good with those factory rounds and a handload using the 95 vmax. I don't have any experience with the 6x45, but I am very happy with the Grendel.

Many have the 6.5G w/the 16" barrel, but I could not say how inefficient/actual effective they are w/a short barrel VS say a 20" or if those shooters hunt/coyote call w/them VS paper shooting.
I know my 20" AR15 6x45 shot everything under .700" or less @ 100 yards and from 200-400 were all under MOA. My 24" bolt build, 6x45 shoots everything from 100-400yds into nice small groups also.
Obaro seems to have no issues w/a shorty^^^^ I see.

I have the Grendel and love it. Waiting on the black hole barrel for my 6x45. It should be done in a few weeks I hope.

If you want a black hole Grendel barrel. There is places that stock them without the wait. The lead time on the new orders is getting way out there. Like you said 4-5 months was last I saw. Now they have the lead times taken off the site.

I have and love both. With that said they each have separate roles, at least for me. I use the 6x45 strictly for hunting coyotes and Pdogs. To date I have only used the Grendel for shooting steel; I would like to use it on a deer one of these days though. I run a 75gr Vmax in the 6x45 and a 123gr SMK in the Grendel, both over IMR 8208. Based on what you indicated your uses would be I would say go with the 6x45. Super easy to load for, and they always seem to be very accurate.

Thanks everyone,
I like both very much. It is true I will be mostly using it for coyotes. Does the Grendel do okay with lighter bullets? How much do you slower is a 16 or 18 inch barrel for the 6.5 and does the 6x45 need a longer barrel? I will probably like to run bullet weights from 55 to 90 for the 6 and try to go under 100 grain in the 6.5. Is that doable?
Thanks
Jon

If your looking for more horsepower and range then a 5.56 the grendel is the ticket. I had a 6x45 and loved it but it wasn't a big enough difference from a 5.56 to keep it. It was a tack driver though. Grendel is my favorite chambering in a small frame AR.

Its just as simple if not easier. It doesn't require any case forming. Mine loves CFE223 and 123 Grain Amax/SST. It carries 1000 ft/lbs out to 400 yards and shoots 1/2 MOA at 300 yards.

I have had real good luck with 95 vmax handloads in my Grendel. Not exactly fur friendly, but all the reach and energy I need. My reloads shoot better than moa on average, but I have not shot much paper other than load development. If memory serves me right, I am getting around 2675 fps with the 95 vmax in that 16" barrel. Reloading is not a problem with Grendel in my experience.

Thanks everyone
I love the 6.5 caliber. I have a 6.5x47 lapua on a remington and a 260 in an xp100. I know the grendel will not be fur friendly but I don't sell my fur. All my kills go to a dead pile to kill more coyotes off of. I just wanted to see if the grendel could go lighter in bullet weight and how efficient it is in a shorter barrel. I know I shouldn't be worried since I have a 15inch 260 barrel on my xp and being efficient. Again thanks and keep it coming.

I will start by saying I do not own a 6*45 but I do own two Grendels and have had 6 total. My first was 16" and it shot 123 smax sub moa but when I put AA 100 grn bergers in it they made a dime size hole in 5 shots. I have a Black hole 20" and it actually shoots lighter bullets better than the 120-123's. The 100grn Noslee bt's are easy to find an accurate load for and pretty fast w/8208 under them. I also shoot 95 vmax w/good results as well as 100grn amax. I think the 16-18" grendel could surprise you with how effective at 4-600yds on yotes.
