6x6.8spc or 22x6.8

I have been thinking about the both of these cartridges. It seems the 22 cal would be approaching the 22-250 speeds, yet still be in an AR15.

I saw the earlier post on the 6x6.8spc, but am curious about the 22 cal also. Anyone shoot both, pro's and cons? How much of an increase over a 223 Rem?

22X6.8 with 50's at 3750. Devastating on prairie dogs. That's out of a 24"AR. A bolt gun will be a bit more. The 6X6.8 will do 58's at 3650-3700 without any strain. The tables are pretty close. Obviously the six is better for combination varmint/big game with bigger bullets but then again lots of deer have been whacked with a 22-250.

To me the 22X6.8 is the most fun I've ever had in a PD field. I have a 26"Savage barrel on the way for it.

I had no interest in deer hunting with it. Mostly coyotes and maybe other varmints. So, If I am right, it is very close to a 223AI's performance?

It should out peform the AI at sane pressures and probably feed as tad better. I've never had a 223AI so Ihave no personal data on it. Also 6.8 bushing dies are cheap.

My thinking is that the 22/6.8 or 22 DTI would be at its best utilizing a fast twist with the heavier bullets thus taking advantage of the shorter overall length of the SPC case. Then you could run the 75gr AMax or the new 77gr Seirra tipped bullets in a standard AR magazine and still not have the bullet seated into your available powder capacity.

I agree with GL that the longer barrel will be needed to realize the good velocities and also realize it ain't no 22-250...... My 22-250 hits 4000 fps with 52gr Berger's. I do have to pull the trigger hard to get those speeds.

I haven't clocked my rifles much. My 223 AI will do 3000fps with 75 AMAX and a 22" barrel on my Rem 700. I think my 55gr SBT's will do about 3500

My 22-250AI does 3800 with 55's. These were/are accuracy loads. I suppose I could step on the gas a bit with the 22-250AI and it's 24" barrel. I suspect the AR's loose some velocity over bolt action rifles?

The 22X6.8 will do 77's at 3100 IIRC the stats.

The AR doesn't loose the velocity inch for inch. I won't run them as hard and yiu have to balance reliability in there. I use an aadjustable gas block. I just sbot a match today with a 243LBC bolt gun. It was the same speed as the load shot in my AR.

My 22X6.8 is a 1:8. It does well from 50's on up to the 77 Noslers I've shot.

I own both. Both are BHW barrels and I'm extremely happy with both. My 6x68 is a 22" light weight rig shooting the 58 grain Tactical Ammunition loads. It has a polymer lower with a 3lb trigger. It's my go to coyote rig. Shot coyotes out to 500 yards with it. It's devastating with little fur damage. Never had a more reliable caliber. Also have shot rockchucks to 400 with it and love it. I built my .22x68 to shoot the heavier bullets and it's a 24" barrel with a heavy billet side charging upper. It shoots lights out with the 69 SMK's. I have shot a couple coyotes with it and it didn't seem to have the lights out capabilities of the 6x68 but I assume if I were to shoot a vmax my results would be closer. I think either one would suit you. I do like that I can get very accurate ammunition from Tactical Ammunition so I haven't loaded for the 6x68. Anyway here are some pics.
This is the 6x68 on the front and the .22x68 in the back.

Here is the .22x68. Atleast a lb or two heavier than my 6x68.

This is a group from my 22x68. Typical of both.
