7.62x 39 in an Ar-15 platform

I recently came across an AR-15 chambered for the 7.62x39. It was an Olympic Arms, after some research I found they only one of the few manufactures that makes them. Magazines seem hard to find, does anyone here know anything or have any experience with the 7.62 in this AR rifle?

I have a Colt Match Target Lightweight 16" barrel in 7.62x39mm. Magazines are pretty hard to come by in my experience. Another thing, for feed reliability the magazines have that sorta extreme banana curl to them. I don’t really care for that much. The higher the round count in the magazine the less reliable in my experience. I think the AR platform is less reliable in this configuration than in the standard .223 cartridge. Mine is sighted with 125 gr. Remington Core-Lokt's and shoots pretty well. I have a tritium front sight on it and really like it for a close range, fast firing, mini thumper. I've shot mine enough that I have confidence in it with the Core-Lokt and about a half dozen of my magazines. I have another half dozen magazines marked as unreliable. I probably need to work those over... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

They are made by most manufacturers. The Olympic is the K30R, the old K30 was a 30 carbine.
You need to pick up a C-products magazine made for the 7.62x39.
Finding reliable mags was the demise and kept prices down on the uppers. Oly just got high capacity mags in stock! Keep an eye on the bolt... most are made by hogging out a standard bolt leaving weak spots on the side of the bolt face.

Finding cheap 7.62x39 ammo has also become more and more difficult. I believe Olympic and others are now making 5.45x39 uppers/carbines/rifles as that is the cheap ammo. It is called a K74, but it is not listed on their website or catalog.(ya gotta call them)

I helped a friend build one, and he really likes his.
We did not have any feeding issues, with either the
upper, or the magazine, he had(C-Products IIRC). I helped
him develop some 123 gr. VMax loads for his, and we shot
some .5 MOA groups with it.

When I decided to get an AR-15, in something bigger than
223 Rem/5.56 Nato, I went with the 6.8 SPC, and I actually
had more problems with that, than the 7.62x39 rifle we
built. I do have the 6.8 SPC running like a top now,
and last weekend, it put 110 gr. VMax bullets into 2 for
2 sub MOA groups, with the third powder I tried for load
development. It is looking like the local coyote population
is in for a tough winter.
