7 mm TCU contender

I was given a contender in 7 mm TCU and was hoping for some input on this gun,I know it was mainly a silouette cartridge but is it suited for anything else such as groundhogs or any other hunting applications and what kind of accuracy and range will this gun have.Any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance.

I had one of those years ago and killed a few deer and lots of groundhogs with it. 120 grain bullets and a Burris 2X7 got the job done. Deer were within 100 yards or so and some groundhogs 200 yards plus. Easy to load for and accurate.

Hey Bill,

I traded a member here a while back for a 7mm TCU barrel and have been having a blast with it ever since. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It is indeed a very accurate round in the Contender but takes a little patience to size and fire-form the 223. rem brass to 7mm. Utilizing "Imperial Die Wax" from the get-go will save you the aggrivation of slit case necks while bumping them up. Also I may suggest using new brass as it is less apt to give you problems.

I must confess that I have not enough range time to recommend loads yet but the 120 grain Nosler's I loaded with 22 gr. of IMR-4198 seem to group real good at 100. This is what they look like in comparison to the "Mother 223. Brass";

So far I have worked on loads ranging from 75gr. up to 120 gr. and they all work decent. The recoil is minimal in comparison to say a 44. mag but still has decent velocity for game whitetail size and smaller.

Here is my rig with custom "Georgia Jim" grips and the new Bushnell wearing the 7mm barrel;

You will Love shooting your's as I do! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

The fact that it is a silloutte round ought to tell you something. Fine choice of weapon and caliber. Just think for a couple hundred bucks a pop you can make it all kinds of things. I have 'em in carbine lengths of 6mm, .204 Ruger, .221 FB, .223 and some larger bg calibers as well.
