700 SPS stock?

I have a Rem. 700 SPS varmint in 243. I would like to change the stock but don't want to break the bank. I was thinking about buying one of the Boyd's thumbhole stocks, and was wandering if anyone has any experience with them. I like the way they feel, I've put them on some old Mauser rifles and made pretty decent guns. It has to be better than the POS that's on it even though it shoots really well with the factory stock it feels like crap! Open for suggestions and opinions.

I have the .223 SPS-V. While some would scoff, I had that factory stock bedded. Noticeable improvement.

That being said I replaced the factory stock on my Stevens 200 in .243 with a Boyd's Prairie Hunter. Slight improvement in accuracy, noticeably heavier with the laminate stock.

The SPS-V's are heavy to begin with so...may not matter.

I was wandering if it would help the balance any? You cannot carry the thing upright on your shoulder without holding the sling or the barrel goes straight towards the ground!

I should have mentioned the weight is not really a problem as I carry a 700 Scendaro 300 Win mag deer hunting and it carries a 100% better, but it also cost double of what the SPS V did!

I would probably help a little with balance but probably not as much as you would like. They are a very nice stock and feel great in your hands. I don't think you would ever regret the investment. Order one and get it a good bedding job will make a big difference in groups, IMO. Good Luck!

Take a look at the Bell & Carlson medalist stock. I put one on my VTR and change the way the gun feels to more of my liking. They are also not that pricey from Stocky's when they have them in-stock.

If you are thinking laminate thumbhole, I would look at the Bobby Hart AccuBlock in LRV [long range varmint]. Very nice stock with the full aluminum bedding tray.

This is the Bobby Hart LRS [long range sporter] same as the varminter just different barrel channel. I put this on a 700 ADL. It worked out very well. You can catch them on sale. I just got mine and payed $287.77

The SPS stock is total junk. When I bought my SPS VS Stainless the first thing I did was order a B&C Medalist as fast as I could. I paid $220 a few years ago.

The problem with balance is the 26" heavy barrel. I'd rather have a 24" even though it's hard to believe 2" could make a difference.

I did the same thing with my 250. It puts Winchester white box 45 gr jhp's and Hornady 52 gr hand loads under 3/4 inch now.

+1, I bought 2 from a guy on gunbroker.com Put one on my .17 Fireball and on my new .260 Rem. Great stock at a great price. I think I paid about $215.00 for mine.

I put the B&C A2 Medalist on mine. It's sole purpose is a prone varmint/target rifle. It sucks offhand and off the sticks, but works good off bipod or bags. It is heavy, but much more solid than the factory Tupperware. It does still tip backwards when slung, especially since it now wears a 28" barrel. Got it from Stocky's for $215.

Remington 700 SPS in .308, B&C Tac Medalist Style 4 (M40)Series 1000 Long Range (02 Black) stock. Leupold VX3 4.5-14x50 (30mm), side focus w/ exposed turrets, and mounted in Talley lightweight rings:

Well balanced, groups under MOA ( usually under when I do my part) using A-MAX 155gr (factory loads) and it shot so well that I didn't bed. Bought mine from Stocky's too.

I built my own. I used the sps as a mold for the front end and inleting. Rear of stock hand layed and sculpted. Rear of stock is solid through and through, I had to do this so rifle would be balanced, it has a 30" 17 contour Krieger. Lots of glassing, bondo, and icing. Grip was made with a bunch a small pieces of matt cut into about 1" squares, wetted them with resin and picked them up with a latex glove and grabbed hold of the rifle, didn't let go till hardend up. Total weight with scope 16 pounds even, 6mm br 600+ yrd gopher getter.

Those Bobby Hart stocks are pretty nice. I was impressed with the one I got.
