I know there are MUCH better bullet choices for 223 Varmint hunting. BUT, has anyone used them for coyotes and how was the terminal ballistics. Personally, my choice is one of the Vmax's.

thanks,
Keith

Welcome to the board wksinatl. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

That is the bullet I use for 300 to 500 yards in a 22-250AI. It is very accurate and bucks the wind great. I have no real experience as far as terminal ballistics go.

never got a yote with one but my 22/250AI shoots them like a streched rubber band. On a crat it just punches a hole straight through.

Keith, I have heard of some guys using the matchking bullet for hunting coyotes, and they had good results. BUT--- I called the factory and talked with their tech support and they said they didn't recommend it for hunting. They said it would not mushroom and would just go right through the coyote. I too wanted to use it because of how good of a group my AR-15 would shoot with it.
Hope this helps.
Mike

I'd summise that you have an 8" twist barrel? If so I'd look no further than the 75gr A-max for both accuracy and terminal performance on coyotes. A BC of .440 aint bad either! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I use the 80gr'ers out of my wildcat at 3350 fps. I don't know about what the Sierra guy said. The coyotes just explode when hit with this bullet! I would print some pic's but they are too messy.

Thanks guys,
this stick is a custom built (CLE) AR with a 24" Krieger 1-7" twist. It is EXTREMELY accurate but not great for a totin' rifle. It loves 75 Hornady Match or 77gr MK, and RE-15 lit with Rem 7 1/2 primers. I plan to use this rifle to compete in Tactical Matches at Ft. Benning, Ga. I shoot the Bolt gun Matches there now. I guess I am trying to make this rifle pull double duty. Clinbing into a tripod stand the other night reminded me how long the barrel reslly is. I haven't spent much time on lighter varmint type bullets because the MK's just shoot so good I hate to mess with it. Also I noticed that I lost the crosshairs way early and one of my NightForce scopes might be better suited and take advantage of the illuminated crosshairs. I guess it's time to play musical scopes again...

BTW, I am talking about the rifle at the bottom. Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the advice!

Keith

Custom 308 with all of the bells and whistles. It is my favorite rifle. I have shot it out to 1000yds at Badlands in Oklahoma. McMillan A3 stock, Blue printed action, Walther barrel, Nightforce 3.5-15-50mm, HS Precision detachable mag, etc.

But the other bolt gun started out as an LTR (308) but has a PSS stock, Leupold 4.4-14 Tactical, and Shilen trigger. Other than that it is stock. Shoots 168 Amax's real well out to 650yds. I haven't tried this one past that.

The last pic is a Custom AR10 (GA Precision) in 260 with a 5.5-22-56mm NF on it. Loves 140MK's but hates the 142 MK's??? I think it because of the difference in ogive of the 2 bullets. I hope to compete with this in the Semi-Auto Precision class at Ft. Benning too.

I guess by now you have figured I am much more a shooter than hunter (my brother is the exact opposite). That's why I hope to learn alot more of the hunting aspect from you guys.

BTW, this is a great site!
