Got a 788 Remington with a pitted bore from a budy for $250. I am making plans to turn it into a .20Practical fot Prairie Dogen. Hoping to get some recomendation on parts. Probably stay with the factory trigger till I see what its like. But will need a good varment weight barrel. Maby fluted. Not necessarily the verry top of the line but hopefuly a great shooter. Also will want a difrent stock. Varment weight, flat forend probably not wood. May want to make it single shot. Is it tough to make a 788 into a single shot? I like the look of the Bell and Carlson tactical/varment stock but they dont make one for the 788.

Thanks to all.

Rich.

I believe Boyd's offers some 788 stocks as well as Richard's Microfit. I've seen aftermarket triggers for them, thinking they were moslty Timney, Midway is showing backorder on the 2-4lb one now. Prefit barrels might not be an option, but a good smith can thread a blank for you and do the headspace and chamber. 788 is a nice, commonly overlooked rifle. Prime example of a big marketing goof letting them discontinue.

788 is one of the best for the money sometimes.Should make you a fine rifle. For your single shot, they make a little plate that slips in the receiver to make it a single shot that don't cost much and works just fine.

Love both my 788's
22-250&308
Both have glass bedded actions free float barrels 250 has an old canjar trigger (before quality went to crap )
308 has
a timmney
Love em. Both
Good luck!

love both mine too have one in 243 with a fajin stock now sold by richards.
still wanting one for the 22-250
i'm a fancy wood lover and want exibition grade for it.

If you can't find a stock, call TM Solutions Tom Meridith and see if he can inlet a flat top Mcmillian for you. I like 788's but never liked the bottom metal and mag on them. I'd go single shot with a follower, then have the stock inletted with no mag well. Richards micro fit is another option, but be prepared to wait and do a bunch of shaping and sanding when it arrives.

McMillan inlets most of its stocks for the 788. I like the Shilen #7 Varmint Contour Stainless barrel. Timney is the trigger to go with. We can fit and chamber the barrel for you and set up the rest of the rifle, as well. As far as single shot, I would go with the detachable mag and not single. JMO

Here is one of my 788 builds in a Richards Microfit Walnut Stock.
