7mm-08 shilen barrel

I hope its better than the last one I got in 22 caliber. It was sad. I keep it in my shop to show people the difference between shilen and benchmark, lilja etc. You shouldnt pay more than about $135 as the 7mm-08 should be in about every gunsmiths collection.

Ive seen really ugly ones shoot really well. With a name like shilen has I would think they would take a little pride in their work.

I've never heard anything but good words about Shilen barrels.
I currently have two rifles with Shilen barrels that shoot very well.
I would suggest that you use the best gunsmith available to fit the barrel as that is as important as the barrel itself.
Don't scrimp in this area, because if the barrel doesn't shoot, you won't know if its the barrel or the fitting job that has it not shoot for you.
There are a whole lot of Shilen barrels being used on the centerfire benchrest circuit, because they are good enough to win matches. That says a lot for Shilen barrels.

Thanks for the replies guys... As far as a good gunsmith goes im not real sure around the Billings area. Anyone from around here that can recommend a good smith?

Neither of the two gunsmiths I use will use Shilen barrels because of the poor quality they have gotten in the past. One strongly recommends Hart, and the other prefers xx douglas. On the other hand, I've heard the old Shilens, when ED was running things, were fine barrels. I think buying custom barrels is a crap shoot. They might be diamonds, or they might be coal. I also think it has a lot to do with the installer. Martyn has a good point. Spend the money on a good smith! JMO

I"ve got a shilen on a rem 700 in a 25-06 and it shoots pretty dam good right now I'd say with the only 2 bullets I've tried in it so far, 100g nbt's and 115g vld's. Both shoot 1-2" 3 shot groups at 400 yards off a bench. I know it aint the best, but it surely cant be the worst either.

Its definately good enough to wack things out to 800 yards consistently so I'm pretty happy.

Only other custom barrel I have is a HART on a 338 EDGE and it also shoots very well. Last 3 shot group I fired at 800 yards was 5".
