7mm 140 gr Barnes TTSX for deer/wolf hunt

I'm leaving in two weeks on a deer/wolf hunt in Montana. I'm using my 280 Remington with a 140 gr Barnes TTSX, I'm not worried about it working on deer but wonder if it's overkill when it comes to a wolf? They're super accurate out of this rifle!

MT FWP recommends hunters use the same cartridge they would hunt deer with for taking wolves. I would be comfortable with a 223 on up with the right bullet (like the ttsx). I often take a 243 or 270 because the wind is always blowing and the shots could be long.

Its definitely gonna punch right on through, likely with little expansion. They are great hunting bullets and should be a dandy choice. See if you can line two wolves up and get em both with one shot! Great bang/flop deer bullet too.

Just curious what load are you using with that bullet? My .280 is crazy accurate with Fed's factory load.So much so I've yet to develop a load that equals let alone betters it.I've tried 3 different 140 gr bullets 4 different powders and charges etc.All shot well but still looking for the holy grail.

You may get less fur damage with the Barnes TTSX bullet than what you would get with a lead big game bullet.

I have shot coyotes in the ribs while deer hunting with Barnes TTSX bullets loaded in 243 Win, 260 Rem and 300 WSM and was very surprised at the small exit holes.

If you hit the shoulder or the back bone you may get different results.

I'm using 53 gr of IMR-4831. It's super accurate with the Noser Ballistic Tip too with IMR-4831. I've been messing with a 140 gr Accubond with H4831 and it's showing real promise.

If these expand little ,like you say, what makes them so great for killing ?

They expand just fine but they don't come apart.

Looking at the entrance holes and the exit holes that the Barnes TSX and TTSX bullets make you would think they are not doing any damage and they are just penciling through.

All of the deer and pigs we have skinned that were shot with Barnes TSX and TTSX bullets had done plenty of damage to the inside of the deer and pigs.

The Nosler E-Tips and Hornady GMX bullets work the same way a small hole in and out, but plenty of damage in-between.

Yep, I've seen the same, plus coyotes and bobcat's.

People seem to think because they don't get a huge exit, that they don't expand.

In my experience they usually run just a bit. They don't put the brakes on deer like a bullet that does not exit. But 2 nice usually 1-2 inch holes in both sides of the rib cage, they don't run far.

This is entrance and exit of rib cage and exit side of deer. 300 Blackout only running 2000 FPS 130g Barnes TSX. Ran maybe 30 yards.

Ive repeatedely gotten caliber size entry, caliber size exit and what i imagine a grenade would do in between. Excluding my last goat theyve been on the ground and deceased before the scope settles.
