7mm or 6.5prc?

Hey guys. Im thinking about a new rifle. I will be shooting to 1000 on paper and hunting anything from coyotes to hopefully some day elk! I have a 7mm rem mag already so have plenty of conpones already but have plenty of 6.5 stuff also! Help me decide!

I have always admired the 7 mag but end up with .300 mag every time and have killed countless deer and elk with it. Even a few coyotes.
In Alaska there is often a debate 7mm or .30-06.
The PRC has had my interest for awhile and I have asked several elk hunting friends how far they think is a reasonable distance for elk with it.
No concensus yet, elk can be tough.
I see guys using the 6.5 Creedmoor which I consider light.

They're both good cartridges and the pros versus cons could easily be argued back and forth for each one.

For me, the biggest difference between the two is the 6.5 PRC can be run in a short action and a Rem 7mm mag needs a long action.

That's great info. I run a 6.5 PRC in a SA, and am limited to bullet selection because of this. SO if your looking for max range high BC and energy, your 7 will out perform the 6.5 PRC.

IF you don't reload then you're limited even more with the PRC regarding load selection, and if you do, you get an even bigger advantage with the BC of the 7 because of the better selection of bullets.

I’ve been a huge fan of the 7mm Rem Mag for the last 20yrs, envying it for a few years before that - before I bought one for myself. But in 2020 and beyond, I’d buy a 6.5 PRC over a 7 Rem Mag every time. If I need more than a 6.5 PRC can deliver, I’m jumping up to a 300 Rum or PRC.

If your 6.5 PRC is built on a Rem 700 SA, maybe take a look at making it a mid length action with Wyatt's mid length kit.

Awesome man! didn't even consider that! Probably allow me to actually run some tipped ammo instead of only the 139 Scenars.

I don't know what the machining would cost to turn a Rem 700 SA into a mid length so you could use one of these Wyatt's kits, but if it isn't to overly expensive and they feed/function as advertised, it should work very well for a lot of different cartridges that are in the middle ground where they could benefit from a longer OAL but don't need to go all the way to a LA.

I wish Tikka would make a T3x light in 6.5 PRC, that would be easy to make into a long action and you could load whatever you wanted in it.

I've been wondering if Beretta/Sako/Tikka would come out with a PRC chambering in the new year.
