8 Coyotes is Too Many.....(long story w/ pics)

It never fails. The best laid plans of mice & men....

No matter how you set up a stand, the coyotes will surprise you with something that you are not ready for!

Here's the EIGHT coyote stand story that happened to us a couple of days ago:

Many of you know "Downtown" Randy Black. He, and his friend Taylor, "TayUt" here on PM came down to do some hunting the later part of last week.
The day started well with us getting to the ranch targeted and winds were calm. The first place we looked at did not contain the amount of sign we wanted to see for our calling, so we bugged out and got closer to water, as it's very dry & the coyotes kinda hang close to water this time of year.

So, we enter the next area that we thought would hold coyotes due to the proximity of water and started calling. The first stand into that new area came and went.

Now things get interesting.....The next stand we set up with the wind in our face at about 7-8 mph. It was clear that the winds would pick up throughout the day to just below gale force, so we had to make our stands count while the wind was still relatively calm.

I set the Fury out in front and settled in the middle. Taylor was to my left about 30 yards, and Randy was on my right about 40 yards. From our vantage point we could see a good sized clearing at 100 yards that extended clear out to about 450 yards with intermittant brush along the way to our standing viewpoint. (Yes, it's one of those areas that hunting standing up gives you a better field of view)

I started playing the two antelope fawn sounds on the caller, switching between the two as the method has proven successful this late season. About 4 minutes into the stand Taylor signals me that he has TWO coyotes coming in on his side....

I'm watching for the coyotes that he has coming in, and patiently wait....

While scanning the area right in front of me, shortly after I knew coyotes were coming in to the left, I see movement in the outter edge of the clearing & unbelievably see FIVE coyotes emerge into the clearing and start heading in straight for the caller!

The way the group of 5 acted was very interesting to me. They never got more than a couple of feet from one another, and acted as one as they snaked through the brush towards the call. I got a fantastic look at them all at once in the scope as they headed in. all FIVE were in the center of the crosshairs at all times. They were that close together!

As neat as it was to watch, that presented another problem!

I have seen this problem before......You are calling and have TWO groups of coyotes coming in. But, they are going to hit the stand at different times!

You know that the first shot fired is going to open the ball, and then it's every man for himself.

I was wanting to get BOTH groups of coyotes in as close as possible before we start the ball rolling and the coyotes start heading the other way. So, I was keeping an eye on the group of five in front of me, trust Taylor to let his coyotes come on in....He did just that. Buster was starting to see the coyotes to the left, and then as they entered the stand he started to interact with them....The gig's gonna be up pretty soon, so I start to look for a target within the group of FIVE.

Sure enough, as Buster interacting with the coyotes coming from the left, we realized that it was THREE coyotes from that direction. Not TWO.

The group of FIVE was closing and at about 90 yards when a large dominant male came closer than the other four and stopped, presenting me with a shot on him, as Taylor was picking his target from the group of THREE....

I settled the crosshairs on the big male in front of me and opened the ball!

He went down and I heard Taylor shoot and saw a coyote go down there. After that things got Fast & Furious real quick! I got on the Pup Distress 3 sound as everything started to leave the stand in a hurry....I tried one more shot on a coyote as he crossed the clearing, but got no meat report from the shot. Taylor scored a hit on a second coyote on his side of the stand.

After that, it was just a little lingering dust in the warming air.

How about that, sports fans! EIGHT coyotes on ONE stand! But, now the sad news was that we only got lead into three of them.....Oh well. That's hunting! But, it was neat as all get out to watch & learn as those coyotes were making their way into the stand. All three coyotes turned out to be big healthy males.

Sadly, Randy was not afforded a shot due to his position on the stand. That's the way things like that go....You can TRY & figure what the coyotes will do, but in the end, there's no way that you will know how the stand will play out until it's over.

Normally, I would say that either EIGHT coyotes on a stand was great, or a stand that you kill THREE coyotes on is indeed a great stand.....But, the way it played out, that means that FIVE coyotes left the stand a little smarter.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On another stand we made when the winds were howling pretty good a coyote responded almost as soon as we played the Coyote Pair vocalization out of the CS-24....It stopped in Randy's range of of shooting, but as luck would have it, the coyote was positioned behind a bush so that Randy can't see it for a clean shot.

The coyote then knew that something was amiss and turned toward the left and started running. He entered a thicket of brush before anyone was able to track and get a shot off. I was ready for him when he emerged at about 125 yards still in his run, and squeezed the shot off, and was happy to hear that V-Max pop as it went true to it's target.

This coyote was another big male. The biggest of the bunch so far. He was probably tipping the scales at closer to 40 than 35 pounds.

We spent more time on calling, and saw plenty of sign...But the winds were doing the usual March Madness, and we wanted to get some time in for javalina too.... Plenty of sign of the javalinas, but I reckon we were not in the right place at the right time for them.

I know that I would like to hear about your stories of calling multiple coyotes one stand and how that worked out for you...OR didn't work out for you. Please post some pics as well in here.

Thanks for looking!

In California we don't get that many at once. My best stand had 3 come over a hill at about 400 yards. I squeaked 1 in to 100 yards, but she had me pinned so I hammered her. The other two were in a group of Oaks and when the broke free they were running at full speed. Lighting struck that day, because I made 2 consecutive shots at over 350 yards running broadside and put them both down. (Normally I miss). So 3 dead females later, I was feeling really good.

That is the most dogs I have ever seen together in my area, as usually a pair is a rarity.

I must say I was deeply amazed at the country I saw in New Mexico when I was down there for my five week stint and will return for a hunt one day when not on my employers time.

It looks like you guys had quite the hunt, I think the javelinas would be a blast to shoot.

I have posted this story here before but I went out solo back in December (my calling buddy decided to sleep in and shut his phone off). The wind was 100% not in my favor but I decided to call anyways. I set up on a large ridge overlooking a pond, a gravel pit and roughly 100 acres of harvested corn field. I started with some soft rabbit in distress and saw 6 coyotes appear. They came in tip to tail. Out the the 6 I bagged 3 with my Rem 700 SPS Varmit chambered in .243. Up to this point in the year I have havested 2 additional coyotes off this stand and only see one set of tracks hitting my bait pile.

Going all the way back to the summer I set up a hasty stand as I had the predator hunting itch and wanted to get out. 10 seconds into my calling I see 5 coyotes appear out of a head high standing corn field. The male I shot came in first and he was prancing through the standing hay to see what was making the distress sound. I dumped him and by the time I worked my bolt and got back on target there was not another coyote in sight. I tried some ki-yis with no luck. I guess you cant win them all.

Barry- can you use supressors to hunt with in NM? They certainly would have helped in your situation. Can you imagine stacking up 5 or 6 in 1 stand?

Barry, sorry forgot to mention:

Good job man, nice action. Wish I would have been there, that is too cool when there are more coyotes coming in than you have bullets for, of coarse you were packing your AR.

Barry,
You could get a guy real angry....I don't see 8 coyotes in a year here in Pennsylvania. Great job you guys.
I think I would have a stroke right there in the field if I ever saw 8 coyotes at the same time.

Antelope Fawn Cry & Antelope Fawn Distress. They are both unique sounds that have a different tone to them. When you alternate the two sounds it draws them in pretty well. I've been using them late season, and in areas that may have been called frequently like BLM popular areas.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I'd like to hear more of your accounts of multiple coyotes coming to the stand....

Good story Barry. We called in a group of 8 a couple of weeks ago. All 8 left after 4 shots and a bunch of decoying action.
smile.gif
The next morning, we called in a group of 5. More great decoying, but only 1 died out of 2 shots and a misfire.

Kind of odd calling in big groups, when most coyotes you see are in pairs this time of year. What were the sexes of the 3 yall killed from the 8? I'm gonna guess that they were young males.

Great action, Barry! We get few multiples over two in our country but that seems to be a more manageable number anyway. Ben called seven at one time (two in one group and five in another) last Fall and ended up with two of them. I pretty much have to have them show up one at a time if I want to kill multiples!
