8MM REM MAG!

I have been thinking of adding a magnum to the collection, and found a 8mm rem mag in a 700 bdl with break for $470. I am in to odd or different calibers and reload so this fits the bill. The price sounds right and down the road I could always use the action to build a gun. I have killed all my Elk with a .280 except for bow kills and the one I got with the .35 rem, but where I hunt is MAGNUM country. What do ya think pick this one up or keep waiting for a 30/378?

I had one of those in a 700 really enjoyed it. Plenty of power, I believe it was developed as an Elk cartridge and would definitly do the job.

If you reload you'll be good to go, the only problem is that there isn't near the selection in bullets for 8mm as there is for 30 cal.

I probably wouldn't get another one myself, mainly for that reason.

The 8mm was/is a good round, just never caught on. Tough to pass it up with the price you mentioned. If you're going to hold out for the Weatherby get a real caliber (338-378), the 30-378 is for girls!

If the rifle is in decent shape, that's a great price. As far as bullet selection, there are enough choices to match any game animal you intend to hunt and I believe Sierra offers a 200 grn. Matchking to boot. I have used mine on Elk, Bear, Deer and speed goats-(Not reccommended, I used 125 grn. Hornady's @3,750 f.p.s. and it was like shooting big prarie dogs

). Tremendous knockdown power with the proper bullet on anything I shot with it.. It will certainly handle any game on this continent and I would feel comfortable using it in Africa. I built mine in 1981 on a Sako AIII-4 Action, Douglas XX barrel, Birdseye maple stock topped off wit a fixed 12X Leupy.

I only wish we had stuff around bigger than whitetails to shoot with an 8mm.
Price sounds very good to me ..... in about any caliber.
