9mm

I am lookin at buying a springfeild XD, but i'm not sure on the cailber either a 9mm or 40sw. I will be using it for plinking mostly, and home defense. If wisconsin gets the concealed carry passed i would problay carry it for that to. I like how cheap 9mm rounds are i have never shot one though, I have shot a glock 22 in 40sw, and the recoil wasn't much nothing like my .41mag, but what do you guys think.

I think either will do what you are asking of it but the 9mm will do it cheaper. There is only about a 2% difference between the two as far as one shot stopping power goes (from my research that is). Unless you are just really wanting the 40 cal then the 9mm will be cheaper for you to shoot. IMHO /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

For home defense, get the hornady TAP, or federal hydrashock hollowpoint, either one will have plenty of stopping power

I have the Springfield Sub-Compact XD with Night Sights in 9mm and it is very pleasant to shoot with very little recoil. I carry the Fed Hydra-Shok's and the Speer Gold Dot in this pistol . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would get the 9mm. Ammo/practice is cheaper. It doesn't matter what round you are shooting if you can't it your intended target at the most stressful and important time of your life. Practice, practice, practice.

I have a Berreta 92FS 9mm pistol, and because the ammo is cheap, and easy to find about anywhere, I shoot it alot. I can't comment on the Springfield XD though, I have no experience with that model.

OK, here goes the can of worms, LOL

1) The guys in the Military want to get away from the 9m/m and go back to the 45.

2) Most police dept's have switched to the 40 S&W.

3) If you think about it, the 9 m/m is about the equivelent to the 38 spl. as for as power goes (a little faster but a little lighter, does shoot flatter though).

4) The FBI, moved away from the 9 m/m years ago due to bad performance ( yes there has been improvements in ammo construction since then with a great choice in premium ammo, but the same would go for IMHO the better caliber choices of 40 S&W, 45 ACP, 45 GAP, 45 SUPER, 38 SUPER, 357 SIG, which for the common calibers I would recommend 45 ACP, or the 40 S&W as first choices) and went to 40 S&W after some testing of the 10m/m.

5) The FBI has also started going back to the 45 ACP in recent years.

6) Faster, without using premium ammo can cause over-penatration, which is not such a good thing in a carry gun. This was part of the problem the FBI had at the time with lack of reliable expansion.

Now with all this said, I do own a 9 m/m, but not for carry. I use it for plinking and small game hunting. for carry I use my 45 Colt Combat Commander, Sig 229 40 S&W, or my S&W 686 357 mag as a road gun when traveling. The 9 is effective enough for a carry gun, and it is only "MY OPINION" but, I think that there are better choices out there in pistols of approximate size. The choice is up to you of course. Just my 2 cents though, good luck on your choice and have fun...JOHN

Don't believe everything you read. Do some research on your own and I think you will find that the 9mm will be just. Now if you need to shoot through a car door or a couple bedroom walls to defend yourself then by all means buy the 40S&W /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Bigger and faster isn't always better ya know. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Without extensive recurrent training, I really believe a double action revolver is the best choice. Until you have been there you will not believe how stupid you can get in a high stress situation. A double action revolver is about as idiot proof as it gets.

Jack,
This is very true, that's why I have a revolver as a road gun.

Harley,
The 9 is faster than the 40 in standard 180 grn, which is bigger, and the 40 is faster than the 45 in standard 230 grn. Speed along with small projectiles of not so great construction at the time was one of the problems the FBI was having (over-penetration with little or no expansion) with the 9. The .357 mag. has the extra speed to cause a less than premium bullet to expand easier, so it never had a problem with expansion but over-penetration is still likely.

I also, suggest that he does his research, I believe he will see that the 45 has been with us for about 100 years and it just seems that everyone is using it to compare other cartridges to and are returning to the 45 when all is said and done. So yes wis_sharpshooter, do the research, ask the questions as you are now (RESEARCHING OPINIONS) then make your own decision...Good luck, and have fun...JOHN
