A couple of questions

I would love to start coyote/bear hound hunting in the next few years but I dont have alot of knowledge in this area so I have a couple of questions about it...

1. Do you always let your dogs kill the coyote? Or do some carry and pistol (say a .22 mangnum?)

2. Are you able to hunt with dogs out in the West? Like Wyoming, Montana, etc.? Or would it be better just to call them in?

4. And should you if you hunt in the West should you carry a sidearm for a possible run in with bears or wovles?

5. How many hounds do you usually have to run? And what kinds? And do you have to see and coyote before you turn your dogs out?

6. Finally how many do some of the guys average that run them out West?

Sorry about all the questions but I really have no idea about hunting with dogs but would really love to get involeed with it...

And any other advice you have I would really appreciate...

Thanks for all of your help...

hey josh
I dont know if i can be any help but will try !!
If i was you i would try and find some that runs hounds and ride with them a few times and get the hang of it!!
First thing you need before you buy any hounds is a good tracker and tracking collars to put on your hounds,
I dont know many that have hounds out west except sight hounds.( like grey hounds or stags)
I dont know why you couldnt run hounds out there.
As for shooting the game in front of the hounds is all up to you. I enjoy good hound action and have the hound power that will kill the yote when caught is why i dont shoot.
first off if you buy hounds you need to buy from some that you can trust cause there is alot of dog dealers in the country!!
I would start with a couple broke hounds. by that i mean deer broke. i free cast to jump all the time. you dont need to see the game first , thats why hounds have a nose . they will find one for you.
I feed about 15 hounds right now but you dont need that many. I would say if you have 4 good hounds that should do you just fine.
If you ever feel like a road trip you are sure welcome to come on over and ride along with me and ill do my best to lead you in the right direction!!
If you get a chance stop on over to my site and ask around. there are alot of coyote hound people over there!!

When we were able to legaly run bear here, we had to break the hounds off coyotes for running bears. Used to be way more yotes than bear. The bear are gaining ground now thanks to the voting public.

Waiting for the bears to hit the suberbs and carry off the poodles in Oregon

josh you might think about getting a couple sight hounds for the open country!! A couple trail hounds to push the yotes out in the open and drop the big guns (stags or grey hounds)
One thing to let you know that running hounds some days they have good days where they can smell a track from 50 yards and the next day you can drop hounds on a 30 sec old track and they cant run it. It all depends on how the barometer holds the scent to the ground!!
But if you have alot of open country with no woven wire fences i would say a couple trail hounds and a couple stags and you would be set like a gold mine!!

I bought a pup not because I know what I'm doing but because the fella I bought him from is a 1/4 mile down the road so he will help me train and I will be running with him all season anyway. If you dont have that luck I would also suggest a started dog there are way to many variables in a hound to try to train your first pup by yourself. Not saying you cant do it but the learning curve would be drasticly shortened with a started dog.
I would take Vargy and MO's opinions to heart on this they are experianced houndsmen and from the photos they know what they are doing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
BTW Vargy, your site is wonderful I had been looking for a forum on running hounds thanks for the address. It is as informational to new houndsmen as PM is to new callers /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
