A day out with the wife

On a rare occassion my wife likes to get out with me for a hunt. She doesn't hunt or even pack a gun but enjoys tagging along once a year. I think its the appeal of the baby cows more than the hunt itself, but when she asks to go with me, I can't say no.

Last year I took her out for her one trip of the year and I ended up killing three coyotes in only a couple sets. I told her she is my good luck charm and that she should come more often.

This time out she brought the luck with her again. At first light we got set up in one of my favorite spots. There are always coyotes in this location, but they always seem to elude me. I started out with a couple invitation howls and had an immediate response, and it was close.

I only had about 150 yards of visibility before a large rock bluff blocked seeing anything past that. The coyote sounded like he was only 400 or so yards away. After about a minute and a half the coyote made an appearance. He was standing on the rock bluff looking for the coyote that was in his territory. 150 yards was close enough for me and I settle the cross hairs in and took the shot. He went down and rolled off the rock bluff he had been perched on.

He was a good-sized male with plenty of battle scars on his snout. I'm sure it was not the first time I had had a run in with him, but it was certainly the last.

The next spot I went to was where I had killed a coyote last weekend. The rancher had lost a cow and dumper her the week before, so I figured it would be a good spot to check in on. The walk into the spot is only about 400 yards.

When I got up to the edge where I could see the carcass, I spotted 2 coyotes feeding on the cow. They spotted me as well and started to trot away. I gave them a woof and one of them stopped to look back. I got the cross hairs settle in and took the shot. She went down where she stood and the other coyote hit the high gear and made it out of sight in a timely manner. As I looked to my right I spotted 3 more coyotes about 900 yards away on the skyline. They of course wanted nothing to do with me, so we headed back to the truck.

I figured that was a good way to end the morning hunt and it was time to take the wife to the calves. Maybe one of these days I can talk her into coming out more because I can sure use the luck from time to time and the time spent together is always a bonus.

Great day out! Glad you both had a good day together.

It would take more than cute calves to get my wife to go. I mean she would love the calves, but then there would be a nice dinner, maybe take her car to the car wash, rearrange the living room furniture and then make me sit through some lame lifetime movie for starters! :ROFLMAO: Honestly, she wants nothing to do with my hunting adventures. She lets me pursue my hunting addictions during the open seasons, but during my downtimes between seasons I am all hers if I know what's good for me! I'm cool with that.

Congrats again on a great day out!

Maybe your wife would like to take a road trip out to Colorado this coming October??

Glad you two had a great time together, I too love looking at the baby calves when they get to running around.l and head butting each other.
