A female coyote tonight

Started the stand and had a pair coming in at 2 minute mark. Thinking this is going to be pretty. Wind is breezy from WSW. The way I set up the stand, I thought that in order to get downwind of us they would have to cross a big canal and then a paved highway, and that surely, they wouldn't do that at 300 yds. out, but these hombres were smart. Crossed the canal, crossed the highway and busted us on the downwind too far to shoot, especially with it so windy. My partner who is still not completely well drove a different vehicle, and left before I did.

So I drove back through the field we had just called and on the other end a mile farther, there was a coyote mousing. I couldn't break her loose from the mice with lipsqueaks so I shot her where she was at 221 yds. Here she is just as she died. I haven't downloaded the video yet.

As you well know sometimes a coyote will go a long ways to get down wind, especially if they have been hunted before. I have seen them travel 100's of yards across a field to catch the wind. Those are the ones that teach us and make us better hunters. We don't learn much from the dumb ones, they die.
Good job on the one you did kill. Another time for the ones that got away. Maybe next time they will be more motivated to come in.

Thanks guys, and you're absolutely right Mike. These coyotes sure weren't reckless. I figured they would come in on the downwind and left them plenty of room to do that without crossing the big canal or highway, but they were smarter than I was. On the one I caught mousing, I was also fighting the moon which was above the horizon and lighting me more every minute. She had not seen me but I knew with me standing and shooting off my tripod that it was only a matter of another minute or so before she did. The wind was shaking my tripod as well, but the bullet went where it was supposed to end up. Here is the video:

That was a good shot. Not sure I could pull that off when standing, with wobbling back and forth in the wind.

Nice video Owen & nice shot ! Maybe I’m missing something here but I haven’t seen where you can give a thumbs up when we share a video from YouTube, when watching it on here like we can when we are on YouTube.
Looks like YouTube doesn’t have that option listed ?

Please help me out if we can !
