Every time I see a thread on hybrid coyotes and wolves, I recall a story from several years back that was funnier than all get out.
One of the very first people to take me under their wing and teach me about trapping and calling was a guy named Joe. He was, later on, my dad's neighbor on the edge of town here in central Kansas. He had this nifty little trapping shed he built in his backyard that had skinning gambrels, workbench, beer fridge. You know... the "essentials". As luck would have it, that fridge was very handy since Joe and his son liked to sit out there on "slow days" and quaff a few ales to pass the hours.
It was on one such day that Joe and his son were out there, quaffing away, when Joe's son heard the beckon call of nature. He stepped outside and did his duty around the corner of the garage where he was visible only to a big field to the north of their property. When he was finished, he stepped back inside and very quietly sat down on a stool, opened another cold can, and just sat there staring at it (the can).
Joe, now feeling the urge, stood and stepped outside. Not so many moments later, he stepped back in and locked the door behind him. He looked at his son and asked, "Did you see it?". To which his son shook his head up and down, replying, "Did YOU see it?" Carefully, they both crept carefully out the door, hugging the outer wall of the shed, and peered around the corner of the garage to, once again, find themselves eyeball to eyeball with not one now, but TWO large wolves.
What no one had bothered to tell them was that this new guy in town, about five blocks away, moved in with a pair of silver timber wolf hybrids that had an affinity for getting out of their pen. Joe and his son had been in there talking coyotes just long enough to have five or six beers a piece too many, and when they walked out and saw those wolves standing there, they both pretty much swore off drinking for the next,...oh,... ten minutes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I swear that this story is true. Funny, too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
