After taking 3 weeks off to hang off the side of trees I got back into calling Sat. night. Didn't start till 11pm to let all the deer spot lighters get home (legal in PA to spot until 11pm and Sat nights are 'busy' with taking kids to see deer
.
Set the call on my way up the hill in this pasture then got tucked into the tree edge and set up. Turned the scope on then the scanner and was reaching for the remote while scanning and see a signature about 300 at the end of this small pasture. Video tells the rest as I grab the closed reed that is on the scanner lanyard and give a few screams. Young male 120yds per onx.
Next set on this farm was a bust.
Drove 5miles to the next place and after my first howls, 2 come into the pasture with 1 sitting down and the other 'smelling something on the ground appearing to be trailing". I thought I hit record but guess not so I did record after it is laying dead. Could not get the second stopped. 155yyds per onx. Big male.
Sunday night the first farm was a bust; again I started late. This place is puzzling, the first year I got permission to hunt I killed 6 but have not heard or seen one in the last 2 years. The landowners occasionally hear them but not as before. On to farm #2.
I am set up at a mutton farm on a hillside facing East with 2 main hollows converging from the North in front of me with a N drifting wind. This is a commercial operation with lots of light about 600yds to my W that kind of has me in a half-moon amount of light. I set up by a double power pole to help hide me a little, but I think this critter looks at me a couple times when coming in. Anyhow, after a couple sets of howls I see 1, then 2 others come running over the knob bout 500yds away to my NW then disappear in timber. Trying to pick them up and scanning around I see this one in the video coming down the bottom. As he gets directly below me, I hit my coaxer (vole squeaks) and again I think he looks at me and not the call which is about 50yds N of me. I bark him stopped and he dies. 135yds onx says Adult male @ about 9min. Stayed in set another 40min. Moved 4-500yds towards where I last heard the others respond to my fight sounds and made another set with no action then went home.
Mon. night I went to the County North of me to 5 properties I just got the ok to hunt last Tuesday which I also somewhat scouted/picked stand spots when knocking on doors then. Well, 6 sets and 7hrs later I had not seen nor heard a coyote. I will be back before the winters over though.
