A2 vs M4 vs CAR etc....

I'm putting together an AR right now. When ordering parts I get very confused as to what "type" of AR I'm building. For some reason I cannot seem to get it straight in my head the differences between an M4 A2 CAR etc....Can anyone help? Even after watching the video's on Brownell's, I'm still confused.

Here are the parts I have so far:

Colt Compeition Stripped Lower (on it's way)
Upper Reciever with fwd assist and dust cover
DPMS Lower Parts Kit

Will this stock assembly kit work? Is says it's for an "M4". Based on the above, am I building an M4? Does this kit contain everything I need to put the assembly onto the lower receiver (minus the actual stock)?

I plan to put a 16" barrel on it and a collapsible stock.

It's probably pretty obvious to most that I am COMPLETELY new to this and probably overthinking it.

Yes you are buildin more of a m4 variant. with the shorter barrel and collapsable stock. The stock kit will work just make sure to get a "mill spec" 6pos. stock and not a commercial.

There is very little difference between a M4 and a CAR type ...The A2 has a solid butt stock and generally a little longer barrel than the other two...

The collapsible stock is nice on a hunting rifle if you wear a variety of clothing as the stock can be adjusted to fit the bulk of your clothing, where the solid butt stock can be a little long if you are wearing several layers...

Thanks for the explanations. I went ahead and ordered the stock assembly kit.

I am still looking for a bolt carrier group, as it seems everyone else is too! They are hard to come by right now.

Does anyone know where I can get one for around $120-150?
