Just an FYI - for any of you living near an Academy Sports store location, you might want to check.

Today I went into an Academy near where I live and they have the Rem 700 SPS rifles on sale for $378. I picked one up in 223 Rem for the small bolt face action.

Dang,,,The closest one to me is in Joplin, MO... that's about a 325mi drive....but at that price, it would almost be worth it..

Don't be to sure about that..
A friend in Nevada recently purchaced a Model 7 CDL in 17FB at the Sportsmans in Reno for 429.00. Thay also had the SPS sporters for 399.00 at the time.
A mutual friend of ours in Boise checked the Sportsman's there after learning about the prices and sure enough, that store had the same deal going and he picked up the same rifle for 429.00..

389.00's an awfull good deal, but 399.00 ain't to far from it.
Anyone with a Sportsman that didn't close in their area should be able to get the same price..

I was tempted to get one of the Model 7's myself, just for the action and nice little wood stocks they put on them, but thought better of it after checking my 401K.

When walmart get's them in stock, they usually run for around $400 too. Great price though, I may have to run by academy in the morning and see what I can scrounge up.

Yes, they started out in Texas. Now they're spreading throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, I think Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Tennessee.

Academy locations

Up here in Ohio, we have to pay a state sales tax on just about everything but food. If I remember right, Texas does not have a state sales tax. Are you fellas getting these guns out the door for that price or is there a fee or gun tax you have to pay? Just curios.

Is it truly a special? Or is Remington realising that they need to put a price that will compete with other companies selling equal, or sometimes better rifles for less? "This isnt a Brand thing,Its a marketing thing" ? Dont get yer remmi panties in a wad... its just a thought/Question.

And don't over-think this...

I was told by the sales person that they were selling only the SPS rifles at this reduced price to get rid of all of them in stock prior to Academy stores receiving a "new" model of rifle from Remington to replace the SPS. He had a computer note on this and the note did not explain what the SPS was being replaced with nor was there a picture of the "new" rifles. He did know that once these SPS rifles in the store were gone, there would be no more stocked. IIRC, the old Academy price for the SPS was $479.

15 minutes from this Academy is a large gun shop that had quite a few SPS rifles in stock today and they were not reduced in price. My guess is this is simply an Academy buying situation.

These stores can get a rifle for you in one day from a distribution warehouse, so I doubt restocking will be a problem when they do it.. It may have already happened. This is not a time of high volume sales just after hunting seasons closed over a month ago here in Texas.

The store I was in only had 3 of the SPS rifles left in stock. Normally they have 15-20 on display or in boxes in various calibers.

Thats good to know. We dont have those stores here, and rarely see prices like those. That is the reason I buy mine online, to save on the prices. Its good that some can take advantage of those savings.

I finally made it to Academy today. There were no SPS rifles and the counter guy did not know the price.

They did have several ADLs for $439 as well as one R-15 22" rifle for $995.

I live within walking distance of an Academy. If you look around often-and I do-they have some great deals. Haven't checked this deal out because the only Remi I own is my 870-other than that all Savage,Howa, and Winchester.
Recent Academy scores-
scent eliminator camo hunting pants-3.99
fingerless fleece and leather hunting cloves in realtree camo .88 a pair-bought the last 5
GOOD wool hunting socks-$4 for 2 pair-bought the last 4
Wolverine insulated realtree waterproof hunting boots $30.00-got 2 pair
Remington 4buck .410 and 12g 3.29 a box-got a few boxes of that too
I never saw an Academy til I moved to Tx-it's a good place.

Wrong. There's no state income tax. Sales tax here in San Antonio is 8.25%. Property taxes are also high, so I guess it all works out??

Just out of curiosity, I called my local AS store.
They said they don't stock the SPS in 223, and can't order it.
They only get what is shipped to them.

Too bad.
