accurate 22LR ammo

Guys,

It's been many years since I shot any rimfire. I rescued an old 572 Remington at a garage sale and refurbished it. I am just about ready to put it on paper. I realize this is the Blonde, Brunette and Redhead question, and each rifle likes it's own diet, but what have you found to be the most accurate hunting, not match ammo you have found? Just looking for starting reccommendations instead of going down the aisle dropping 15 different kinds of shells in the cart.

I have a ton of the cheap Federal on hand. It seems to do pretty good. I have had good luck with the Remington gold bullets too. Mini-Mags not so much. Remington Vipers do well..

I have a Remmmie 572 I bought in the 70's.. The Feds are very good in it. I had the factory re-barrel it last year..

I have a Remmy 580, a Win 9422, a couple of 10/22s and a CZ 452. The CZ likes wolf target, Federal 510 target, and SK Match. The rugers like mini-mags. The trigger on 9422 is gritty enough that ammo doesn't seem to make a difference. It's been so long since I (more accurately my wife) shot the 580 that I don't recall what it liked. I do remember she was better with it than I was with just about anything.

If you're after accuracy, I'd try the fed 510, and try to scare up a box of wolf.

For plinking I've been happy with the Fed bulk pack stuff.

Same here...

I've had the best luck with CCI Blazers in my .22's...the best way to do it is to buy a box of each and try them all....every gun wants something a little different.

Thanks for the input guys, I will scoop up some of the recommended stuff and see how she groups. (hopefully not patterns)

I will post a range report when finished testing.

CCI mini-mags are great game loads.

I like the Federal Champion bulk pack. And the Winchester 36 gr copper plated.

Winchester Power Points and CCI Small Game Bullets have been pretty consistent hunting ammo for me over the years. And I'll throw another plug in for the Mini Mags. My all time favorite was the old Eley "White Rabbit" that has now sadly been discontinued.

FWIW,Last year I ranged checked my .22s with cheap Wal Mart ammo - Remington Golden Bullet, CCI, Federal , Winchester 333. My Ruger 77/22, Marlin 39a, and Ruger10/22(big barrel) all worked great with the Winchester. I tried to use some expensive target ammo as a benchmark, but the Winny outshot that too.

my favorite hunting round is the Rem cyclone 36g hollow points. Took a couple squirrels at verified 100 yards with them out of a marlin a couple years ago. Dont hit them in the body though, or you wont have anything left.

For practice I shoot the federal cheapos, they work good in my gun but my buddy has problems with the fed in his Rem. He has a F2F every 3 or so rounds with fed, so he shoots win super-x.

Coming from my 10/22:

All time favorite are the CCI Triple Shok, if you want to save meat DONT use, but they shoot danged accurate and are devastating.

Next in line are the Federal Game Shok, no where near as devastating but they put squirrels down, just not as consistant IMHO

CCI Mini-Mags, only shot a couple hundred of them but they seemed to work.

Out of the bulk boxes of ammo

Winchester Wildcat and 525 are my favorite. Cheap, shoot pretty good, and seem to work for rabbits and squirrels. They are about the same as the CCI Blazers which I think are another awesome bulk buy.

Have come to conclusion that the Winchester dynapoint 22 ammo is pretty accurate in my various 22 rifles. Began using this ammo after a gent had experimented with 4 or 5 different kinds of 22 ammo in 4 different rifles one day at range I shoot. The Winchester Dynapoint ammo was the most accurate for him in all 4 rifles.

I remember reading people saying great things about the Dynapoint ammo, but could never find any in .22LR, but have seen the .22 Magnum stuff all over. Wonder what's up with that?

I've had real good luck with American Eagle 38gr HPs in my Henry. These are pretty much the same thing as the Federal bulk others spoke of.

Winchester Subsonic HP 40 gr.

This stuff is well respect for superior accuracy at a affordable price with nice performance on game if you read up on rimfire central.

CCI stuff is generally good but rarely the best for accuracy.

Subsonic/standard velocity will always be more accurate past 50 yards then high velocity or hyper velocity.

I tried a lot in my 452 lux i used to have and teh Win SSHP was sweet expecially for the price.

If you want accuracy over FPS and ability to kill. look at the Eley brand of ammo. That is what my target rifle shot the best. Red or Black box as we called it. Red is said to be better than the black box.

As far as non target ammo My wife says that Federal shoots accurate at least for shooting sage rats.
