Ackley Improved?

This IS a stupid question, but what is Ackley Improved?

I have seen it on a ton of calibers, but what are the improvements over a standard caliber (example 280Rem vs. 280 Ackley Improved).

Different shoulder angle resulting in more case capacity resulting in high velocities and almost always better case life due to less case stretch. Created by Mr. Ackley

Yes, firing the parent cartridge is how you end up with the formed case. The body taper is also reduced.

Here is a 223/223AI.....243/243AI.

To not confuse you by my above post. You CAN fire a vanilla cartridge in the AI'd Chamber....but NOT an AI'd cartridge in standard chamber.

the bolt won't close on an AI cartridge in a factory chamber,..so not really rocket science.

I have 3 AI's,...and I like the design.

The Ack Imp gives you basically two improvement over the standard. It gives you a increase in velocity and makes case stretching almost nonexistent. The 257 Roberts and the 280 Remington gain the most from improving in my opinion and are two of the best for this upgrade. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

yes there are catridges that simply won't gain any improvement from the improved case so they are better left alone and not improved upon

can you have a Ackley improved chamber cut on a standard 223 or do you have to have the entire barrel recut and rechambered?

The barrel should be set back and rechambered, cuz the Ackley chamber is shorter than the normal .223, and if you just cut the new chamber, the .223 case will be loose in the chamber and have lottsa headspace.
