Advice needed for newbie

Hey guys,
Just closed escrow on a new piece of property with a real coyote problem and am trying to gear up to thin the population a little. Haven't ever really targeted varmints or dogs so I'm open to any advice you can give me. What do you recommend for calls? I don't really want to spend a fortune. I was looking at the Edge Expedite Mighty Predator E-caller. Sounds like the FoxPro's are better but a lot more expensive. Is the Edge good enough or is there another in that price range that you'd recommend?
Also, does anyone know if the motor unit on the Mojo Critter is the same motor as on the Mojo Wing Thing? I already have one of those and was thinking I could just get some fur and fashion a makeshift Critter without buying a new motor.

MO,

The motors in the critter & the woodpecker are different.

The critter has an integral switch that makes it start/stop, while the woodpecker runs all the time.

Let us know about the Edge caller. I think it's faily new, and not many have tried them.

If that`s all the acres you will be hunting that ma be all you need. Especially if your going to try and stretch it into a couple of stands. Is there property to call over in and try and get them to your spot.

Yes, all of the adjacent properties also have coyotes on them as well. In fact, the majority of dogs I've seen so far have come off the neighboring property onto mine to hunt gophers and rodents in my orchard.

That edge caller you mentioned from what I gather might be okay. I guess you can down load sounds and it holds 16. I don`t know much about it.I was going to reccomend a Preymaster since I know it works. It`s the same price, maybe a little cheaper. It may be to your advantage to set up near the property lines and call into the neighbors property.

That's what I'd recommend in the price range you're looking at. I saw a used one in the classifieds here last week for $100 with 4 sound cards (16 sounds).
Get one with a wireless remote, that's a nice feature. (PM-4 is wireless, PM-3 isn't)

I know for a fact those call critters in VERY well. Plenty loud to reach into the neighbor's lots, too.

Huh? Please explain this reset your talking about?

Thanks.

When I first got my PM-4 I had trouble getting all three sound card slots to work I could get a couple at a time, but when I would take it hunting at least one wouldn`t work. I e-mailed Hunter Specialties and recieved a reply from Joe Sahm. He said that the caller probably need to be reset. I could do this by taking a paperclip and inserting it into the small hole close to the battery compartment and holding any yellow button downon my remote with the caller on. I needed to hold them down at the same time for 3-5 sec. That would re-program the caller.

Holding that button reprograms the remote to the caller frequency.

1) While the base unit is turned off, remove the batteries from the base unit and reinsert them.
2) With the base unit still turned off, remove each of the three memory cards from the base unit and reinsert them, making sure you can hear them lock/click into place. (Also, try the memory cards in different slots to determine if the problem may be with the cards and not the base unit.)
3) Turn the base unit on and select a sound, making sure the remote is at least a few feet away from the base unit. (If it’s too close, it may not signal properly.)
4) If you think the problem is with the memory cards and not the base unit, please take a Q-Tip and some rubbing alcohol and clean the brass contacts on the cards. Occasionally there will be a slight residue on these contacts, and oftentimes, this is all that is needed to get them working.
5) If the preceding steps do not work, re-synchronize the remote with the base unit by taking a pin (or a paper clip that’s been straightened out), and inserting it in the small hole above the battery compartment on the back of the base unit. While pressing and holding this ‘reset button,’ push a button on your remote and hold it for three seconds. This will reprogram that remote to that particular base unit and reset the caller.

(I have never had to do either one of those things.

You need to check out the 2 new calls that Wildlife Callers aka Lioncaller has on his website. Not overly expensive, but with plenty of quality sounds.

Hand calls are all you need to start out.

I like sceery calls myself.

Best thing you can do is watch byron south coming to the call volume 2, 3 , 1, 4 , and 5 in that order. The videos will basicaly teach you everything you need to know to get started.

I hunted for weeks. Then I watch part 2 and 3. Next morning killed the dog in my avatar in just 5 minutes on the first stand! He came in just 10 yards infront of me.
